After childbirth, when you look in the mirror,
many people say,
“I can’t tell whether I gained fat or whether my skin is sagging.”
Even after your weight has mostly returned, your stomach may not
flatten out, or it may feel like it has lost elasticity even when you
tighten your muscles.

At this point, the important thing is to accurately distinguish whether
there is simply leftover fat, or whether the skin or muscles have
become loose.
Because the approach changes depending on the cause, the way to
address it also changes.

- Main reasons why belly fat remains after childbirth
Changes in the abdomen after childbirth cannot be explained simply
by weight gain.

During pregnancy, the abdomen expands significantly, and the skin
and muscles both stretch at the same time.
In that process, elasticity may decrease, or the rectus abdominis
muscles may separate.
After childbirth, sagging belly
That is why some people find that their belly does not flatten even
when their weight decreases.
In particular, when you pinch the abdomen, there are cases where fat
feels firm,
but there are also cases where it folds weakly or sags like wrinkles.
These two are completely different issues.
- Fat vs. sagging: how to tell the difference
The simplest criterion is the “feeling when pinched.”
When there is a lot of fat, the abdomen feels thicker and relatively
firm when pinched.

On the other hand, when sagging is the main issue, it tends to fold
thinly and feel loose and droopy.
Also, if the abdomen spreads sideways when lying down, the fat
component is usually greater. If it hangs downward when standing,
the likelihood of skin sagging is higher.

If rectus diastasis is present, the center of the abdomen may also
appear as a bulging protrusion.
It is important to check these differences first.
- Care methods needed in each case
If fat is the main cause, the basic approach is to reduce body fat
through diet control, aerobic exercise, and strength training.

If needed, procedures to reduce localized fat may also be considered.
On the other hand, if skin sagging or reduced elasticity is the main
cause, simple weight loss has limited improvement.

In this case, lifting-type treatments that improve skin elasticity, or
methods to organize loose tissue depending on the condition, may be
considered together.
If rectus diastasis is also present, core muscle strengthening exercises
are important.
- Why the wrong choice changes the result
If sagging, not fat, is the problem but you try to reduce fat only, it
may actually make the area look looser.

Conversely, if there is a lot of fat and you only focus on elasticity
management, you may not feel the expected change.
So for the abdomen after childbirth, the key is not “you must lose
weight no matter what,” but first identifying what type of condition
it is right now.

Only by setting that standard accurately can you avoid wasting time
and money and approach it in a direction that suits you.
