For those considering abdominal liposuction, the most
common question is the recovery period.
Rather than the procedure itself,
“From when is daily life possible?”,
“How long does swelling last?”,
“How long do I need to wear the compression garment?”
These are the three questions people ask most often.

I hear the same questions repeatedly in the clinic as well.
So today, I will organize the recovery process after abdominal liposuction
step by step.

| Overall recovery period for abdominal liposuction |
Abdominal liposuction recovery period: how should you think about it?
Even if the incision range is not large,
abdominal liposuction is a procedure that treats a broad area, so recovery
progresses in stages.

Usually, it is easiest to understand when explained in three points in time:
“1 week, 1 month, and 3 months.”
For about 3 to 5 days immediately after surgery, swelling and soreness are at their peak.
At this time, it is better to keep activity light rather than move the body excessively.

After about a week, pain decreases significantly and everyday movements become possible.
However, visible swelling still remains, so the shape is not yet fully settled.
Usually, the major swelling goes down after about 2 to 3 weeks,
and around 1 month is when the changes become noticeable to those around you.

However, it is more accurate to understand that the final contour is completed around 3 months,
when the tissues have stabilized.
Swelling has a reason for lasting longer than you might expect
Swelling is not simply a matter of fluid buildup;
it is a natural process that occurs as the tissues react in the space where fat has been removed.

Because of that, the swelling that decreases quickly at first
and the swelling that settles slowly afterward appear separately.
In the first week, the entire abdomen often feels hard and tight.
By weeks 2 to 3, the major swelling goes down,
but you may feel as if only certain areas remain swollen.
At this stage, some people may think, “It seems like there is still no effect,”
but in reality, the tissues are in the process of settling.
Compression garments: why are they important, and how long should you wear them?
A compression garment is not only for reducing swelling.

It helps the area where fat has been removed adhere evenly
and allows the skin to fit smoothly.
Usually, we recommend wearing it for at least 2 weeks,
and for 3 to 4 weeks as the suggested standard.
Left) Before, Right) After 1 day
During the initial 1 to 2 weeks, it is best to wear it almost all day,
and afterward, adjust it according to your activity time.
If the compression garment is not worn properly, a bumpy feel may remain,
or recovery may slow down.
However, excessively strong compression can cause discomfort,
so an appropriate level of compression suited to your body type is important.
Returning to daily life: when is it possible?
Light daily activities are usually possible about 3 to 5 days after surgery.

However, it is better to avoid positions that involve sitting for long periods
or putting pressure on the abdomen in the early stage.
Exercise needs a more cautious approach.
Light walking exercise is possible after 1 week,
Abdominal liposuction
but exercises that significantly increase intra-abdominal pressure are safer when started at least after 3 to 4 weeks.
In the end, the important standard is
“not the pain, but the degree of discomfort.”
Abdominal liposuction
Even if there is almost no pain,
if a pulling sensation or soreness remains,
it means the tissues are still recovering,
so it is better to avoid excessive activity.
