Today, I’d like to talk very honestly and realistically about no-prep laminates, which many people are curious about. I’ve also gone through a lot of trial and error while researching this field. :)

Can a place that does no-prep laminates well really do it without shaving the teeth? When is completely no-prep possible?

To get straight to the point... “It depends on the case.”

When the teeth are small or positioned inward

If the front teeth are naturally small, or if the teeth are tilted toward the back, it can truly be done without any shaving at all.

When there is space between the teeth

If there are gaps between the front teeth, no-prep treatment is possible by filling those spaces.

When only color improvement is desired

If you are satisfied with the shape of your teeth and only want to change the color, no-prep can be enough.

1. Skill is important, but honesty matters too

Places you can trust:

• Places that say, “We need to do a precise examination first”

• Places that honestly explain cases where treatment is not possible

2. Facilities and equipment are important too

No-prep laminates require much more precise work than regular laminates, so:

• Check whether they have a 3D oral scanner

• Whether they use a digital design system

• Whether they have an in-house lab (direct production is better for quality control than outsourcing)

• Whether they are equipped with precision devices

It’s a good idea to check these in advance.

3. Check whether the aftercare system is well organized

Because no-prep laminates have a slightly higher chance of coming off than regular laminates:

• Whether there is a regular checkup system

• What the after-sales service policy is if a problem occurs

• Whether care instructions are provided in detail

Information you should hear:

• Whether there are any special precautions for brushing

Cases with a high chance of being suitable for no-prep

• The front teeth are tilted backward
• There are spaces between the front teeth
• The front teeth are smaller than the other teeth
• The gum line is even

Needs judgment after consultation

• The front teeth are average in size
• There is mild crowding
• There has been past treatment on the front teeth

Cases where no-prep is difficult

• The front teeth are large and protruding
• There is severe crowding or misalignment
• There are large fillings on the front teeth

Aftercare, an essential guide for successful results

Immediately after the procedure (1–2 weeks)

Things you can do

• Eat soft foods (porridge, soup, yogurt, etc.)
• Brush with lukewarm water
• Use a soft toothbrush
• Take the prescribed medication

Things you must avoid

• Hard or chewy foods (nuts, dried squid, ice, etc.)
• Biting something with the front teeth
• Foods that are too hot or too cold
• Excessive brushing

Daily care (after 1 month from the procedure) ​ Proper brushing method

• Use a soft toothbrush (do not brush too hard)
• Choose toothpaste with less abrasive material
• Be gentle when using dental floss
• Use mouthwash with a low alcohol content

Dietary precautions

• Do not bite hard things with the front teeth
• Do not open bottle caps or tear packaging with your teeth
• Improve habits such as biting your nails
• Do not bite pens or pencils

• The laminate feels loose or strange
• Persistent sensitivity
• Swelling or bleeding of the gums
• Discoloration at the edge of the laminate

No-prep laminates can create a beautiful smile while preserving the natural teeth.
