Can International Students Get Orthodontic Treatment in Korea? Orthodontic Treatment During Summer Vacation

Today, I would like to share the story of a patient who visited us while living abroad.

Because the patient lived overseas, they naturally wanted to minimize the number of visits to the clinic.

I’ll begin today’s post with the topic:

Can international students get orthodontic treatment in Korea?

For international students and people living abroad who want orthodontic treatment in Korea, we use Invisalign treatment as the only practical option.

The patient originally wanted only the front teeth straightened and requested partial orthodontic treatment.

However, after a detailed examination, we found a crossbite in the molar area, so we recommended comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

The patient said that the crossbite might have been the reason they usually bit the inside of their cheeks, and changed their choice to comprehensive treatment.

The patient had many prosthetic restorations and was also very concerned that the attachments might come off while living abroad.

This was how the patient looked when they first visited us to receive their aligners.

Since the patient lived abroad, we attached all the attachments, including those for the first set of aligners, on the first day.

We also gave the patient six months’ worth of aligners.

With Invisalign, there are active aligners used for orthodontic treatment and overcorrection aligners that are prepared in addition when requested.

When a patient is able to visit once every two to three months as usual, overcorrection aligners are not commonly used.

However, in this case, we could see that the front teeth were still spaced, so we decided to continue treatment using additional overcorrection Invisalign aligners.

We agreed to consider having them remade if there were any areas that needed further correction.

In this situation, it would be best to visit frequently for checkups. However, since the patient lived abroad, they left Korea after agreeing to return four months later.

This was how the patient looked during the October visit.

After the initial consultation, the patient returned to receive the aligners.

This was the fourth visit in total: checking the fit after putting in all the aligners, and then checking again after wearing the overcorrection aligners.

The patient said they were satisfied and asked us to finish the treatment without additional aligners.

Since it was difficult for the patient to visit us to have fixed retainers attached or to pick up retainers, we ordered Vivera retainers and sent them by courier.

The aligners were remade once, and the result might have been perfect if treatment had continued for another one or two months. However, the patient was satisfied, so we were happy to bring the treatment to a close.

Although Invisalign is not the best orthodontic appliance in every case, when considering orthodontic treatment in Korea for international students or people living abroad, is there a better option than this for a patient in this situation?
