Hello, this is Apgujeong Yonsei Baro Dental Clinic.
When people reach their 40s or 50s, they often think about orthodontic treatment but hear things like this.
“Why get braces at this age..."
“Doesn’t orthodontics in middle age damage the gums?"
“They said it’s too late, so I shouldn’t do it."
But in actual university hospital orthodontic departments,
middle-aged orthodontic treatment is performed very often.
What matters is not age, but
✔ Gum condition
✔ Alveolar bone condition
✔ Tooth alignment
✔ Overall health condition
.
Today,
I’ll introduce the actual Invisalign treatment process of a patient in their 50s.

Q. Is orthodontic treatment possible even in your 50s?
A. Yes, absolutely.
Age alone does not determine whether orthodontic treatment is possible.
In fact,
a person in their 50s with healthy gums, or someone in their 60s who has been well cared for,
may sometimes be treated more stably than younger people with poor gum condition.

This is a patient in their 50s who came in because they wanted to fix the crowding of the front teeth.
They came in worrying a lot about whether it was okay to get orthodontic treatment at their age.
Looking at the X-ray, the jawbone was strong enough, so orthodontic treatment was possible without separate gum treatment.

This patient in their 50s had severe crowding of the front teeth,
so they visited us because they felt discomfort when smiling and in terms of maintenance.
They also had the concern,
“Is it okay to do this now when I’m already at this age?”
Invisalign Lite seemed possible, so we recommended it.
However, the teeth marked by the blue arrow were significantly rotated.
The lower premolars have a rounded shape, so it may be difficult to fully control the rotation with Invisalign Lite.
We explained these limitations and began treatment.

At the fifth month of treatment, the aligners were being worn diligently and the teeth were moving.
After wearing all 14 aligners in the first set, one re-fabrication was also done.
And treatment was completed at the 11-month mark from the start of treatment.

As the crooked front teeth spread out, it became more comfortable.

The rotated premolars also returned to their original position by about 80%, though not 100%.

24.10
As shown in the post-treatment X-ray, there is no root resorption or worsening of the gums due to orthodontic treatment.

23.12~24.10
As the front teeth became aligned, the smile stood out more.
The total treatment period was 10 months, and excluding the waiting periods for the two appliance remakes, the actual treatment period was 8 months.

23.12~24.10
When teeth are crooked, they are harder to clean properly with brushing, which makes cavities and gum disease more likely.
When the teeth are aligned, care becomes much easier.
Orthodontic treatment is not only for cosmetic reasons or simply to make teeth look better.
Q Is middle-aged orthodontic treatment only for making teeth look better?
A. It can have aesthetic purposes,
but in many cases, the functional purpose is even greater.
Crooked teeth can lead to
Difficulty brushing
Increased risk of cavities
Increased risk of gum disease
Reduced chewing function
.
Aligned teeth are much easier to care for.
If you have been thinking about orthodontic treatment all your life, now may be the earliest time to start.
Don’t give up because of age,
and first get an accurate examination to see whether treatment is possible with your gum condition.
Thank you.
