Hello.
This is Apgujeong Yonsei Baro Dental Clinic, specializing in Invisalign treatment in Gangnam.
Today, we would like to share a case involving orthodontic treatment for a child in Apgujeong that may be helpful for those looking into pediatric orthodontics in Gangnam.
This child originally visited us for treatment of spots on the front teeth.
Along with ICON treatment for the spots, we recommended Invisalign First, a clear aligner treatment for children.
Many parents ask, “My child still has baby teeth. Is orthodontic treatment really necessary?”
However, the key to pediatric orthodontics is not only to straighten currently misaligned teeth, but also to create an environment in which the permanent teeth that will emerge can erupt in the correct positions.
In particular, the canine teeth are large and erupt relatively late. If there is not enough space when they erupt, they often come in as crowded teeth. Therefore, it is very important to secure sufficient space before the canines emerge.

Before and after ICON treatment.
Immediately after ICON treatment.
ICON makes white spots less visible without grinding the teeth.
However, while ICON is highly effective when the spots are shallow, as in this child’s case, if the spots are deep or the MIH is severe,
there may be some recurrence.
Although the condition improved compared with before treatment, the spots were not completely concealed.

Because there was insufficient space and the front teeth were emerging crookedly, we began Invisalign First treatment with the goals of creating space for the permanent teeth and straightening the front teeth that had already emerged crookedly.
The treatment took five months.

During that time, the remaining front teeth descended into a stable, aligned position.

Looking at the before-and-after photos, spaces actually appeared in several areas in front of and behind the baby canines after treatment.
This means that space was prepared in advance for the permanent teeth to emerge.
This helps prevent even relatively large canines from emerging as crowded teeth later on.

A fixed retainer wire was attached to the aligned front teeth, and the retention period began.
We also made a removable clear retainer to be worn only at night during the retention period.
With results like these, further orthodontic treatment later on will most likely not be necessary.

Pediatric orthodontics is not simply a treatment to straighten the current visible alignment of the teeth.
It is a treatment designed to prevent future malocclusion by predicting the positions and eruption directions of the permanent teeth that will emerge.
In this case as well, treatment focused not only on arranging the front teeth that had already emerged crookedly, but also on securing sufficient space for the canines and permanent teeth that will erupt in the future.
The greatest goal of pediatric orthodontics is not to resolve the problem visible today, but to prevent larger problems in the future.
