Apgujeong White Spot Tooth Treatment｜White Spots (Mottled Teeth) on the Front Teeth?

Today, I would like to introduce a case of Icon treatment and resin treatment for spotted teeth, for those who are stressed by white stains on their teeth.

Some of you have uneven white spots on your front teeth, don’t you?

These white spots are called spotted teeth or mottled teeth.

There are two main treatment methods for spotted teeth.

If the spots are shallow and light in color, they can be treated without grinding the teeth through a treatment called Icon (product name).

You may be wondering how Icon works.

Spotted teeth are caused by the reflection of light from extremely tiny pores on the tooth surface. The treatment opens these tiny pores and fills them with a flowable resin made of even finer particles.

However, if the spots are deep and dark in color, it is better to remove the spotted areas and fill them with resin.

Many patients worry that grinding the spots may be bad for their teeth, but the spots themselves are limited to the enamel layer within the outermost 1 mm, so the amount removed is very shallow.

Therefore, to reassure patients, we often show them the actual area that was removed in a mirror before filling it with resin.

Today, I will share the treatment story of a patient who had both types of spots.

Spots can be seen in various areas.

Some areas are dark, while others are light.

The darker areas are deeper, so the effect of Icon is limited.

It is better to treat them with resin from the beginning.

Icon may be worth trying for the lighter spots.

The clearly dark spots on the two central front teeth were expected to show only minimal improvement with Icon, so resin treatment was recommended.

We also decided to replace the old, grayish resin from a previous treatment.

Here is the appearance before and after treatment.

The spots in the areas treated with Icon either disappeared or became lighter.

The large spot on the canine became lighter after Icon treatment, but about 50% of it remains.

However, because the area was too large, treating it with resin would have required removing a larger portion, so we decided to finish the treatment at this level.

Today, we looked at treatment methods for spotted teeth.

Treatment for spotted teeth does not involve applying the same method to every patient.

The best results are achieved by accurately diagnosing the depth, size, and location of the spots, then appropriately selecting Icon treatment or resin treatment, or using both together.
