Today, we would like to introduce a review of front teeth partial orthodontic treatment for rabbit teeth and a crossbite in a woman in her 30s.

Today, we will discuss a simple case of partial orthodontic treatment for the front teeth.

The patient was a woman in her 30s who visited us for orthodontic treatment in July of last year.

Her two front teeth were large, commonly referred to as “rabbit teeth.”

Both lateral incisors and the left canine showed a crossbite, biting behind the lower teeth.

Black triangles were visible between the lower front teeth.

Black triangles are well known as a phenomenon that can appear after orthodontic treatment, but they may also be present from the beginning when the gums are thin and receded.

Because there was no protrusion and the molar alignment and occlusion were good, we recommended partial orthodontic treatment for the front teeth.

Why Was Partial Orthodontic Treatment for the Front Teeth Chosen?

After analyzing the occlusion in detail,

• There was no protrusion of the mouth, and

• The molar alignment was stable, while

• The molar occlusion was also good.

Therefore, we determined that partial orthodontic treatment for the front teeth was an appropriate treatment option rather than full orthodontic treatment.

However, to improve the crossbite of the left canine, it was necessary to adjust not only the canine but also the first premolar behind it.

We decided to proceed with treatment using the MTA mini-tube appliance and began by attaching the appliance and aligning the teeth.

This was the appearance at five months after the start of treatment. The orthodontic treatment shown below was completed one month earlier, so the appliance was removed first.

Elastic bands were used to resolve the crossbite around the left canine.

Then, in January 2025, the appliance was removed after six months of treatment.

Here is a before-and-after comparison.

The left side shows the condition before treatment, and the right side shows the condition after treatment.

The black triangles between the lower front teeth disappeared during alignment after interproximal reduction.

The crossbite of the canine and lateral incisor that had been biting behind the opposing teeth was resolved, resulting in improved occlusion.

Retainers Completed as Well

After the orthodontic treatment was completed, retainers were made and fitted to prevent the teeth from moving back.

Orthodontic treatment does not end with removing the appliance. Consistently wearing the retainers and undergoing regular checkups are also very important parts of the process.

An Accurate Diagnosis Determines the Treatment Method

Not everyone with crooked-looking front teeth receives the same treatment.

For some people, partial orthodontic treatment is sufficient, while full orthodontic treatment may be more appropriate for others.

The important thing is to accurately analyze the current alignment and occlusion of the teeth, then select the most efficient treatment method.
