Can Invisalign Lite Work for People in Their 50s? A Real Middle-Aged Orthodontic Case Improving Butterfly Teeth and Gum Recession

Many people need orthodontic treatment but are concerned that their gums may worsen.

This is true for young adults as well, but especially so for people in their 40s and 50s.

“​​My gums are weak. Will they get worse if I undergo orthodontic treatment?”

This is a question frequently asked by people who come in for middle-aged orthodontic treatment.

There is a possibility of this happening if a person with thin jawbone and receding gums undergoes comprehensive orthodontic treatment that takes one to two years.

The dentist must examine the condition carefully.

However, with partial orthodontic treatment to straighten only the front teeth, there is very little tooth movement, so the likelihood of the gums worsening because of orthodontic treatment is extremely low.

Why the Gums May Appear to Have Receded After Orthodontic Treatment

After orthodontic treatment, some patients say:

“​​It looks like my gums have receded because of the orthodontic treatment.”

However, in many cases, this appearance is actually caused by black triangles.

When teeth that were crooked and overlapping become aligned, the shape of the jawbone that was present from the beginning may become visible, making the gums feel as though they have receded.

In other words, the gums have often not newly receded because of the orthodontic treatment; rather, the pre-existing gum condition has become visible.

Teeth that protrude significantly from their original alignment often have gum recession.

This is called gum recession.

However, when the teeth are moved back into their proper positions through orthodontic treatment, the receded gums often recover as well.

Today, focusing on this aspect, I will introduce a middle-aged orthodontic case involving Invisalign Lite, butterfly teeth, and gum recession in a patient in their 50s.

A patient in their 50s visited us for orthodontic treatment because their front teeth had gradually become more protruded and misaligned.

They had completed extraction-based orthodontic treatment a long time ago, but as they grew older, their front teeth gradually became misaligned, so they came in for partial orthodontic treatment of the front teeth.

After seeing Ye Esther talk on television about getting results with Invisalign, they gathered the courage to visit us.

In the end, they made the right decision by coming to us.

The area indicated by the blue arrow has receded gums compared with the surrounding teeth.

This is because it is the tooth that is furthest out of alignment.

When it is moved back into its proper position, the gums may recover.

The two upper front teeth are protruding and rotated.

Although it is not the official term, patients call this “butterfly teeth.”

This case can be sufficiently corrected with Invisalign Lite.

Invisalign Lite provides up to 14 aligners per set.

Considering the patient’s age and gum condition, using a 10-day replacement interval rather than seven days generally places less stress on the gums.

It takes approximately 140 days, or about five months, to wear all 14 aligners in the first set.

This is how the teeth looked after wearing all the aligners for five months.

The teeth became aligned, and the black triangles were reduced through a small amount of interproximal reduction.

However, there was a difference in the heights of the upper front teeth, so we decided to address this with additional aligners.

The angle of the protruding front teeth improved, and the butterfly teeth and rabbit teeth were aligned.

The result was already quite good, but we proceeded with the production of additional aligners with the goal of achieving a perfect result.

The additional aligners were worn for three months, from February through May, with each one worn for 10 days, completing the treatment.

The black triangle between the upper front teeth was reduced through interproximal reduction, but a black triangle appeared as the previously crooked lower front teeth became aligned.

Similarly, the size of the black triangle in the lower teeth was reduced through interproximal reduction, but interproximal reduction should be performed only to the extent that it does not place undue stress on the teeth.

The gum recession recovered, reducing the exposure of the tooth root.

When people reach their 40s and 50s, their front teeth become crooked as part of the direction of physiological biting forces and the natural aging process.
