Hello. This is 연세유라인치과의원, located at 825 Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul,
near Exit 1 of Gangnam Station.
Today, we would like to talk about how the duration of implant treatment varies from person to person—and even from case to case for the same person.

Many people wonder how long implant treatment takes before undergoing the procedure.
To put it simply, if all the teeth have already been extracted and treatment begins after the bone has healed, it usually takes about 2–3 months.

This is because the implant needs time to firmly bond with the bone after it is placed.
This process must progress properly so that the implant does not become loose and can withstand the forces involved in chewing.
On average, it takes about 2 months at the shortest and around 3 months at the longest.

However, this applies when the tooth has already been extracted and the bone has fully healed.
If treatment starts with tooth extraction, it takes longer.

After a tooth is extracted, the site is left empty, and it takes at least 2–3 months for this space to fill with bone.
Therefore, when calculated from the beginning, the entire process usually takes about 4–6 months.

There can be some differences from person to person.
People who originally have healthy jawbone and no inflammation often complete treatment in about 4 months.

On the other hand, if severe gum disease has damaged the bone as well, recovery takes longer, and treatment may take 6 months or more.
This is because additional time is needed for the bone to regrow and become firm.

Another important factor is each person’s overall condition.
Bone regeneration tends to be faster at a younger age, while the process slows with age, and the bone may also become weaker.
Therefore, treatment time can vary depending on age as well.

If the bone condition is poor, bone grafting may also be necessary.
That is why your treatment may take longer—or finish sooner—than someone else’s.

In particular, treatment can take much longer for people who smoke.
Even after 2–3 months following extraction, the bone often does not fill in properly, and when the area is opened during surgery, there may be very little bone inside.
Therefore, smoking can significantly reduce the success rate of implant treatment and make the treatment duration difficult to predict.

Also, the end of implant treatment does not mean that care is finished.
Implants do not develop cavities, but gum inflammation can occur easily, so regular dental checkups are necessary.

At first, have the implant checked at 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month intervals.
After that, you should still make sure to have it examined at least once a year.
This is because an implant is not a natural tooth and has limited sensation, making it difficult to notice a problem at an early stage.
Therefore, be sure to receive regular checkups and take thorough care of your implant.

If you maintain it properly through regular care, implants are often used for more than 10 years,
and many people actually use theirs for over 20 years.

So, please remember that consistent care after treatment is truly important for using your implant well for a long time.
