When a tooth is fractured or chipped, many people wonder
whether treatment always requires an implant or
whether there are other options.

In fact, even when a tooth is fractured, the treatment method
varies depending on the severity.
Today, we will briefly summarize the treatment options for each situation.

A tooth is divided into the crown, which is the visible part, and
the root. Treatment varies significantly depending on whether
the crown is broken or the damage extends to the root.

A tooth also consists of the outer enamel, the dentin beneath it,
and the pulp layer containing the nerve.
The extent of the damage—specifically, which layer it reaches—is also an important factor.

If only a very small portion of the edge is chipped,
especially if it is not a front tooth and does not cause much of an aesthetic concern,
it is often simply smoothed and left in use.

A small chip can also be filled with composite resin,
but areas that receive a lot of force may lose the filling quickly,
so treatment may be completed with simple smoothing instead.

If the chipped area is somewhat large or is highly visible, as with a front tooth,
it may be restored with composite resin. If the fracture is more extensive
and a simple restoration is unlikely to remain stable,
crown treatment becomes necessary. If the nerve is damaged,
the tooth must be finished with a crown after root canal treatment.

A problematic situation occurs when the fracture extends
deep below the gum line.
If it extends downward by approximately 1–2 mm or more, inflammation
may recur even if a crown is placed. In such cases,
extraction followed by an implant is often necessary.

A strong impact can also fracture the tooth root itself.
Although this may not be readily visible from the outside,
an X-ray can reveal separation or a crack in the root.
In such cases, there are very few other options,
and extraction followed by an implant is ultimately chosen.

In summary, a chipped or fractured tooth does not automatically
require an implant. Treatment options vary depending on the location,
depth, and size of the fracture, as well as whether the nerve is damaged.
Therefore, it is important to undergo an accurate X-ray examination at a dental clinic
and decide on the best treatment method after consulting with a dentist.
