Hello. I am Shin Seung-hwan, the chief director of Yonsei Uline Dental Clinic Garak Branch, right in front of Exit 4 of Garak Market Station in Garak-dong, Songpa-gu.
Today, at Yonsei Uline Dental Clinic in Garak-dong, Songpa-gu, we will talk about teeth whitening treatment and its effects.

Teeth whitening is a treatment that brightens the natural color of our teeth.

However, whitening agents react only to “natural teeth,” so their effects may be limited for porcelain restorations, restorations containing metal, or teeth that have darkened after root canal treatment.

Many people want perfectly white, even teeth like celebrities. However, that kind of bright color is mostly the result of restorative treatment, specifically porcelain restorations.
You should first understand that natural tooth whitening alone cannot create a pure white color like a bathroom sink’s porcelain.

That does not mean whitening has no effect.
Teeth that have become yellow over time due to food stains or aging can be clearly improved with whitening.

Frequent consumption of dark-colored foods such as coffee, wine, and curry can also cause discoloration, and in such cases whitening is a good solution.

There are also exceptional cases.
If discoloration occurred during tooth development after taking a specific antibiotic in the past, or if the tooth has darkened from the inside after root canal treatment, it is difficult to achieve results with standard whitening.

In such cases, it may be necessary to consider whitening the inside of the root canal-treated tooth separately, or, if needed, combining it with restorative treatment to match the color.

Another point to keep in mind is that if there are restorations, whitening may make the color mismatch more noticeable rather than less.
Therefore, it is important to check whether restorations are present before treatment and plan accordingly.

Then how long does the whitening effect last?
Even after whitening, if you continue to drink coffee or eat strongly pigmented foods as usual, discoloration will gradually return.

So whitening is not something that ends with just one treatment; usually, if you feel the color has darkened again after about a year, it is a good idea to do whitening again regularly.

Many people ask,
“Does having yellow teeth mean they are unhealthy?”
In fact, it is natural for adult teeth to have a more yellowish tone than children’s baby teeth.

Having teeth that are too white does not necessarily mean they are healthy either.
When cavities develop, the enamel is damaged, and the teeth may first appear as white spots before gradually progressing to brown or darker colors.
In other words, tooth color is not an absolute indicator of health, and it is good to remember that whitening is a treatment intended only for aesthetic improvement.
