Hello, I’m Shin Seung-hwan, the chief director of Yonsei Uline Dental Clinic, Garak Market Station branch, near Garak-dong and Garak Market Station in Songpa-gu.
Today, I’d like to talk about the causes of denture discomfort, which many people commonly experience, and how they can be used a little more comfortably.

The easiest way to understand why dentures feel uncomfortable is to start with the structure of the mouth.
Inside our mouths, there are both moving tissues and non-moving tissues.

If you think of the palm of your hand, some parts are firm and attached, but the skin between your fingers moves easily when you pull it.
The mouth is the same.

When dentures are placed on this “moving tissue,” the dentures have no choice but to follow that movement.

Even dentures that seem to fit well at first glance will naturally move slightly when they receive force while eating, and this movement repeatedly rubs against the gums, causing pain.

Just as even well-fitting shoes can make the soles of your feet hurt if you walk for a long time, dentures are the same.
They may be fine when they move only a little, but when strong force is applied, such as while eating, they become uncomfortable because they rub and press.

If your dentures are very uncomfortable, the first solution is generally to have them remade more precisely.

However, for people whose jawbone has shrunk significantly, even well-made dentures will inevitably have some movement.

In such cases, placing a few implants to help secure the dentures is a much more stable method.

Because the implants distribute the force, the dentures move much less than conventional dentures, and comfort while eating improves.

There is also one misunderstanding that many people have.
“Dentures aren’t real teeth, so I guess I don’t need to brush them?”
Surprisingly, many people think this way.
But dentures definitely need to be brushed.

Let’s think about the environment inside the mouth.
It is warm, humid, and small bits of food residue remain.
Even when we are not eating anything, cells from inside the mouth naturally shed.

All of these become excellent food for bacteria.
That is why plaque forms on dentures, tartar forms, and staining occurs as well.
Because it is an environment where fungi can easily grow, hygiene management is even more important.
In conclusion, if dentures feel uncomfortable, rather than simply dismissing it as “dentures are just uncomfortable by nature,” it is much more helpful to look at why they are moving, what structural reasons are involved, and, if necessary, choose the best option such as precise remaking or combining them with implants.
And if you take care to brush and clean your dentures every day as well, you can use them more hygienically and more comfortably for a longer time.
I hope this helps those who have been uncomfortable because of dentures.
