The gums are part of the periodontal tissue that covers the teeth and their roots. Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is a condition in which this periodontal tissue is damaged, and because it can lead to other conditions as well, prevention and management are very important. Today, let’s take some time to learn about periodontal disease.
Here we go~

What is periodontal disease?
Teeth are firmly held in place by the periodontal tissue, which consists of the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. That is why we can usually enjoy hard and chewy foods without worry. Periodontal disease is a condition in which this periodontal tissue becomes infected by bacteria and inflammation develops.

Causes of periodontal disease
The biggest cause of periodontal disease is bacteria around the gums. There are various bacteria in the mouth. Some of them do not cause major problems, but certain bacteria are highly pathogenic and invade the gums, causing inflammation. In particular, if your health is weakened due to diabetes or other illnesses, periodontal disease can develop more quickly.

Symptoms of periodontal disease
In the early stages of periodontal disease, pain is not severe, so it is not taken seriously and a dental visit is often not even considered. However, if it is left untreated like this, the disease progresses more and more quickly, so by the time you feel tooth pain and visit the dentist, the condition has often already advanced significantly. At that point, more treatment is needed, and recurrence is common. That is why, if you feel pain in your teeth, we recommend visiting the dentist without hesitation.

Prevention and management of periodontal disease
Prevention is the most important thing when it comes to periodontal disease. For this, proper brushing is essential, and it is a good idea to receive regular scaling.
When brushing your teeth, it is best to use a soft toothbrush and gently clean the teeth and gums. After brushing, it is also a good idea to use interdental brushes or dental floss to clean around the teeth and gums once more.

Many people wonder how often scaling should be done. It is recommended to have it done at least once a year, and for those with a history of periodontal disease, every three months or even more often is necessary to help prevent recurrence.
Healthy gums are directly connected to tooth health, so they are very important. Maintain gum health and prevent the onset of periodontal disease through proper brushing and regular scaling. Thank you!
