Why do eyes look small?
Why do eyes look small?
It is natural for someone with small eyes to want their eyes to look bigger.
What are the reasons eyes may look smaller than average?
They can be broadly divided into two categories.
-
When the upper eyelid that covers the eyeball sags or stretches and blocks the field of vision (pseudoptosis)
-
When the muscle that opens the eyes is weak due to ptosis symptoms (true ptosis)
Usually, when the eyelid sags, aging is the biggest cause.
In cases like, "My eyes were big when I was young, but as I got older they feel stuffy and seem to be getting smaller," aging is the main cause.
Sagging caused by aging is not only due to eyelid sagging, but also forehead sagging, so an accurate understanding of these two causes, the eyelid and the forehead, is necessary.

If the cause is eyelid sagging from simple aging, it can be solved with surgery to remove the sagging eyelid skin.
The upper blepharoplasty we know is exactly a surgery that removes sagging eyelid skin.
The amount of excision is adjusted according to the structure of the eyeball, the degree of eyeball protrusion, gender, the amount of sagging, and the individual's needs.
Male ptosis
If, in addition to eyelid sagging, the muscle that opens the eyes is weak or insufficient, we call this ptosis, and eye opening correction surgery is needed.
Because of ptosis, opening the eyes can look tiring and give a sleepy impression.
Ptosis symptoms are not limited to just a sleepy feeling; they are also accompanied by a habit of raising the sagging forehead in order to secure the field of vision. When you open your eyes by lifting your forehead, forehead wrinkles can appear even at a young age, and they become deeper as you get older. Therefore, after an early diagnosis, undergoing eye opening correction can have a positive cosmetic effect.
In men, the amount of skin removal, degree of correction, incision line, and the extent of eyelid sagging vary from women, and individual needs are different, so it is important to design the procedure while considering the patient's situation.
Typical ptosis symptoms
-
The eyes look small, and the horizontal width of the eyes feels generally narrow and long.
-
When opening the eyes, they feel stuffy and sleepy.
-
To secure a better field of vision, you habitually open your eyes wide, and as shown in the photo below, wrinkles form on the forehead.

- To secure a blocked field of vision, you unconsciously lift your chin.

Recovery process after eye opening correction surgery
These are photos taken 7 days after eye opening correction surgery, after stitch removal, and 3 months after surgery.
The recovery process after eye surgery naturally varies from person to person. However, in general, after stitch removal and once the major swelling goes down, things stabilize after about 1 to 3 months.
In male patients, the double eyelid crease may look thick at first, but this is a natural phenomenon, and it becomes thinner and more natural over time, so there is no need to worry too much.

Small eyes, changes in the pupil before and after male eye opening correction surgery
After surgery, you can see that the black pupil is clearly revealed.
As much as the pupil is revealed, the distance between the pupil and the eyebrow becomes shorter.
The forehead wrinkles that had been lifted due to ptosis naturally smooth out.
Today, we looked at the causes of eyes appearing small as described above. There are many reasons eyes may look small, but if ptosis is the cause, it can be sufficiently improved through eye opening correction surgery. Ptosis has limitations in improvement if only eyelid removal is performed. If you try to improve only eyelid sagging without eye opening correction surgery, the amount of skin removed may increase and the double eyelid line may become larger, so we recommend identifying the cause through thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon and undergoing the appropriate surgery. The surgical cost may also vary depending on whether it is a revision surgery and on the difficulty of the procedure.
