Why does ptosis occur?

Ptosis refers to a condition in which opening the eyes becomes difficult due to an abnormality in the eyelids or the muscles that open the eyes.

Normally, the black part of the eye is covered by about 2 mm.

If it is covered beyond that, we feel that our field of vision is cramped.

The most typical sign of ptosis is using the forehead to open the eyes wider, which causes wrinkles on the forehead.

Just as you may lift your chin when your eyes are blocked by a hat with a wide brim, if you have ptosis symptoms, you may unconsciously develop the habit of lifting your chin.

How can ptosis be treated?

Ptosis symptoms are caused by two factors: drooping eyelids and weak eye-opening muscles.

Drooping eyelid skin can be treated by removing the sagging eyelid skin.

However, if the eye-opening muscle is weak, the condition can be improved through eyelid correction surgery by tightening or adjusting the muscle.

Surgery time and care

The surgery takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes for both sides combined,

and is performed under local anesthesia.

For 1–2 days after surgery, it is best to rest and avoid overexertion.

For about 2 weeks after surgery, avoid irritating the eyes, such as rubbing them strongly, and avoid postures that increase intraocular pressure by bending the head down.
