How many times is eyelid revision surgery possible?
When consulting about eyelid revision surgery, I often get asked, “How many times can revision surgery be done?”
I can tell that this question comes from anxiety about whether another attempt, after already experiencing one failure, might lead to yet another failure.
However, eyelid revision surgery is not a procedure where the answer can be given as a number.
Whether revision surgery is possible depends much more on the current condition of the eyes than on how many surgeries were previously performed.
Even with the same two revision surgeries, some eyes may have almost no remaining tissue damage, while others may already have severe scarring and adhesion after just one or two surgeries.
That is why, in eyelid revision surgery, the standard of “how many times” is not very meaningful.
As repeated surgeries are performed on the eyes, various changes accumulate in the skin and internal tissues.
Scar tissue gradually becomes firmer, the normal anatomical structure is distorted, and the elasticity of the skin and muscles also gradually decreases.
These changes not only make the next surgery more difficult, but also limit the range of results that can be expected.
As the number of revision surgeries increases, the more important standard becomes not “how much better can it get?” but “how much can it be kept from getting worse?”
Another important factor in eyelid revision surgery is sufficient recovery time.
Before the tissues from the previous surgery have fully stabilized, it is a rule not to rush into the next surgery.
In general, at least six months are needed, and in cases of extreme revision surgery where the condition has been significantly damaged, it is advisable to judge whether surgery is appropriate only after more than a year has passed.
If revision surgery is repeated before the tissues have recovered, the likelihood increases that the situation will worsen rather than improve.
In such cases, postponing surgery can itself become part of the treatment.
Not every eye is a candidate for revision surgery.
Depending on the current condition, some eyes simply need more time, and there are clearly eyes for which recommending additional surgery would be less safe.
If it is judged that the potential losses are greater than what can be gained from revision surgery, choosing not to operate may be the most responsible decision.
The most important thing in eyelid revision surgery is not “how many times it can be done,” but calmly determining whether another surgery is truly necessary for this eye at this point in time.
Eyelid revision surgery is not a surgery to be done more often, but one that must be chosen more carefully.
And the 기준 for that choice should come before technique: it should be judgment first.
