Hello.
I am Kim Mu-jin, the head dentist at
“Dental Clinic for a Healthy Smile.”

I always strive to preserve the natural teeth of everyone who visits,
while providing comfortable treatment.

My gums hurt so much and bleed every time I brush...
My teeth hurt whenever I drink cold water...
Why does inflammation keep happening
after I got an implant?
Many people come to us with these concerns.
In fact, all of these symptoms are closely related to a gum tissue called “keratinized gingiva.”
Imagine this.
Blood pouring out every morning when you brush your teeth.
Your face cringing because you cannot even drink a sip of cold water properly.
An implant that you spent a lot of money on starting to loosen in just a few years.
At the starting point of all these nightmares,
there is a hidden problem: “insufficient keratinized gingiva.”
When keratinized gingiva is insufficient, the gums gradually weaken,
the tooth roots become exposed,
and an environment that allows bacteria to invade is created.
Eventually, periodontitis worsens, and in the worst case,
even healthy teeth may need to be extracted.
Especially in the case of implants,
if there is no keratinized gingiva, inflammation around the implant can occur,
and expensive treatment may go to waste.
Today, for those of you in this situation,
I would like to explain in detail why keratinized gingiva is important,
and how it should be managed.
- What is keratinized gingiva?
It is the gum tissue that firmly surrounds the teeth.

Unlike ordinary gum tissue,
it has a thick and firm texture,
and plays an important role in protecting the teeth
from external irritation.

In fact, people with sufficient keratinized gingiva
do not bleed from the gums even when brushing,
do not feel sensitivity when drinking cold water,
and show strong resistance to bacterial infection.
On the other hand, when keratinized gingiva is insufficient,
the gums become thin and weak,
and are easily damaged even by minor irritation.
In this state, even a small amount of tartar can cause inflammation,
the gums bleed even from brushing,
and over time, gum recession occurs,
with the gums gradually pulling back.
- Problems caused by
insufficient keratinized gingiva
When keratinized gingiva is lacking, various oral problems
occur in succession.
The first common symptom is gum bleeding.

Do your gums bleed every time you brush your teeth?
Have you ever bitten into an apple and seen blood on it?
This is a representative sign of insufficient keratinized gingiva.
Next, tooth sensitivity appears.
When you eat cold water or hot food,
you feel a sharp, stabbing pain.
This happens because the tooth roots are exposed externally
due to the lack of keratinized gingiva.
For people who have implants, this is even more serious.
If there is no keratinized gingiva around an implant,
the likelihood of peri-implantitis increases sharply.

According to research results,
implants with insufficient keratinized gingiva
have an inflammation rate more than three times higher
than those without this issue.
This means that an implant that cost millions of won
can unfortunately fail within just a few years.
- What if keratinized gingiva is insufficient?
If the deficiency is already significant,
professional treatment may be needed.
At our D-Day Dental Clinic, we provide customized treatments such as
keratinized gingiva grafting and regenerative procedures,
depending on each patient’s condition.
In particular, methods such as FGG (free gingival graft) or CTG (connective tissue graft), which transplant healthy gum tissue from the palate or another area, can effectively
reconstruct keratinized gingiva.
Regular checkups are also essential.
It is important to have a specialist examine your gums every six months
to check their condition,
and to receive treatment early
if needed.
I always emphasize that “prevention is the best treatment.”

This is because managing problems before they arise
is more efficient both in terms of time and cost.
Now we have looked at the importance of keratinized gingiva and how to manage it.
The reason I chose this topic is actually simple.
During treatment, the moments that felt especially unfortunate were
when I had to say,
“If only you had come a little earlier...”
Gums are not easily visible,
but they are hidden guardians of dental health.
Just like the foundation of a house,
when they are strong, you do not notice how important they are,
but when a problem occurs, the whole structure shakes.
I always pursue “treatments that preserve natural teeth”
with the hope that you will not have to experience such pain.
I sincerely hope that your precious teeth and gums remain healthy for life.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described today,
do not hesitate
and I recommend consulting with a specialist.
Please remember that prevention and early treatment
are good choices.
D-Day Dental Clinic will always do our best
to help you maintain a comfortable smile.
Have a healthy day.
Thank you. : )
