If tooth decay and fracture symptoms are detected early
They can be treated easily
Tooth decay and fracture symptoms
Hello.
This is Kim Moo-jin,
Chief Director of D-Day Dental Clinic.

What if you thought of tooth decay
as a crack in a wall?
At first, it starts as a very small hairline crack.
If you catch it then, it can be fixed with a simple repair.
But as time passes, the crack gradually widens,
and eventually the whole wall may need to be torn down.
Teeth are the same.
A cavity that starts as just a small black spot
can, if left alone, lead to root canal treatment, a crown,
and in severe cases, even extraction.

I’m not in much pain,
do I really need treatment now?
is what many people ask.
I understand.
Since it isn’t bothering you right away,
you may want to put it off.
But the problem is that by the time tooth decay starts to hurt,
it is already quite advanced.
Today, I’ll show you how different
it is when tooth decay and fracture are caught early versus late.
If you read this post,
you’ll clearly understand
why early detection matters.

- Tooth decay and fracture,
the difference between early and late stages
Tooth decay requires
completely different methods depending on the stage.
Early cavities are
just slightly present on the tooth surface.
At this stage, it can be finished with a simple same-day filling
using a material called resin.

It takes less than 30 minutes,
and there is almost no pain.
But what happens if you leave it alone?
The decay begins to dig deeper into the tooth.
At this stage,
resin is no longer enough.
An inlay prosthesis must be made and attached,
which requires at least two visits,
and the cost rises several times over.
What is more serious
is when it reaches the nerve.
From that point, pain begins.
You will need root canal treatment,
and a crown must be placed on top of it.
It takes several weeks,
and the cost is more than 10 times higher than early treatment.
This patient visited due to front tooth cavities.
After root canal treatment on the two upper front teeth, zirconia crowns were placed.

It is the same cavity,
but depending on when it is found,
the difficulty, duration, and cost
can vary this much.
- If it is found early,
it is this simple
Early cavity treatment is really simple.
Only the affected area is removed as minimally as possible,
and the tooth is filled with a tooth-colored material called resin.
You can think of it as similar to
putting a bandage on a small scraped wound.
The amount of tooth removal is also minimized.
Healthy tooth structure is hardly touched,
and only the decayed part is removed slightly.
Preserving the natural tooth as much as possible
is the best treatment.
No artificial material is better than a natural tooth.
On the other hand, what happens if it is found late?
If the cavity becomes more extensive,
an inlay or crown is needed,
and this requires removing a significant amount of tooth structure.
Tooth decay and fracture symptoms
This patient visited for molar cavity treatment.
The amalgam with secondary decay was treated with an inlay,
and the severely decayed tooth was treated with root canal treatment followed by a crown.

An inlay is a method of filling part of the tooth like a puzzle piece,
and a crown is a method of covering the entire tooth.
In particular, a crown requires trimming the tooth all the way around,
so the amount of tooth removal is large.
Once a tooth is cut down, it does not grow back.
That is why it is so important to detect it early
and preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible.
- Less painful treatment,
how is it possible?
Many people fear dental treatment
because of the pain.
I also had a fear of dentists when I was young,
so I fully understand that feeling.
That is why, when treating,
the part I pay the most attention to
is pain control.

Even when administering anesthesia,
we take enough time
and proceed slowly.
If the anesthetic is injected too quickly,
it can cause a sharp stinging pain.
If it is injected slowly,
anesthesia can be achieved with almost no sensation.
There is one more rule.
As much as possible, on the first day,
we complete all procedures that could cause pain
before sending the patient home.
That way, from the next visit onward,
you can receive treatment comfortably.
When patients say,
"It didn’t hurt at all, more than I expected,"
that is the most rewarding moment.
We do not push treatment through
in an unreasonable way.
I believe the best treatment is treatment that
the patient understands and feels comfortable with.

If early cavities are found quickly,
they can really be resolved very simply.
There is almost no pain, the cost is low,
and the natural tooth can be preserved as much as possible.
On the other hand, if discovered late,
treatment becomes more complicated,
and time and cost increase severalfold.
Regular checkups alone
are enough to help prevent it.
If you get checked just once every six months,
you can catch it early and handle it simply.
Please do not put off taking care of your precious teeth;
I hope you take action right away.
