Why Laminate Costs Differ
A Doctor Explains Directly
Laminate Cost
Hello,
Are you looking for the reason laminate costs differ?
This is Kim Mu-jin, chief doctor of D-Day Dental Clinic.

I used to not like laminates very much.
That may sound strange coming from a dentist.
Back then, I thought:
"Why would we shave down healthy teeth just to make them look better?
I’m not sure this is right."
So when patients wanted a consultation,
I would quietly recommend other options.
Laminate Cost Differences: A Doctor Explains Directly-
But a few years ago,
my thinking changed completely.
It happened after I saw a patient who had gotten laminates at another dental clinic and came to me because they had been damaged.
Ah, the problem was not the laminate itself,
but how it was done.
After that, I started studying laminates,
and now I can confidently say this:
If done properly,
it is truly a good treatment.
But that "properly"
shows up in the price.
Today, based on what I have personally experienced
and felt,
I will honestly explain why laminate costs differ.
I’ll explain in detail so that you can make a smart choice with this one post.

- Laminate cost
is not about material cost
Many people misunderstand this part.
"The expensive place probably uses better materials, right?"
In reality, the difference in material cost
is not that big.
The material cost difference between a 500,000 won case and a 1.5 million won case is often less than 300,000 won.
This is a prosthodontic patient who visited for brighter, well-aligned front teeth.
A laminate treatment was performed on 12 upper and lower front teeth.

Then what accounts for the remaining difference of more than 1 million won?
It is the amount of tooth reduction.
The level of difficulty changes completely depending on how much of the tooth is shaved.
No-prep laminates may sound like a marketing term,
but in reality, there are specific cases where they are possible.
They are only possible when the teeth are small or spaced apart.
But in most cases, some reduction is necessary.
The problem is how precisely it is shaved.
0.1 mm and 0.5 mm may look small as numbers,
but in a tooth, the difference is enormous.
If too much is removed, the nerve may become exposed,
and later the tooth may become sensitive.
- The real difference is
'time and skill'
It takes me at least 30 minutes to do one laminate.
Even just the anesthesia is done slowly for nearly 20 minutes.

"Doctor,
why does it take so long?"
Because taking time is necessary
if you want it to be painless.
If the anesthetic is injected quickly,
the gum tissue swells and
it causes a sharp pain.
It’s like a balloon that could burst
if you inflate it too quickly.
If it is injected slowly, the tissue gradually adapts,
and the anesthesia is achieved with almost no pain.
This is why I do it this way,
even if it takes a little time.
When shaving the tooth,
it’s the same.
To carefully refine only 0.1–0.2 mm,
you need concentration and time.
If you rush, you end up shaving too much,
and then problems arise later.
In fact, among patients who got
laminates done elsewhere,
I often see cases where they say,
"It fell off in less than a year,"
"My gums keep swelling and hurting."
Most of those cases seem to have been done quickly
without enough time.
The second point is whether it is designed to match your own teeth.
Laminate cost

A laminate is not something that is mass-produced in the same way for everyone.
Each patient has different tooth color,
different gum lines,
and different desired shapes.
Some people want a natural look,
while others want a bright white appearance.
To achieve high satisfaction, you need enough consultation with the patient
and repeated communication with the lab.
This is a prosthodontic patient who visited to address microdontia.
A laminate treatment was performed on the 6 upper front teeth.
Places that do many cases quickly
skip these steps.
So the price
has no choice but to be lower.
- How to tell whether a laminate
is done properly
Don’t judge only by laminate cost.
Instead, ask these questions.
"During the consultation, does the doctor personally look at my teeth and explain my condition?"
"Do they explain how much of the tooth will be shaved,
and why it needs to be shaved?"
"Do they design it to match my tooth color and shape?"
If a place can answer these questions clearly,
then even if the price is a little higher,
you can trust it.

I do not proceed with treatment if the patient does not understand and agree.
In theory, the doctor may be right,
but the patient is the one receiving the treatment.
That is why I always show them 3D images and explain in detail,
"This is the current condition, and if we treat it like this,
this is what it will look like."
We begin only after they understand
and give consent.
A laminate is a treatment that can last a long time once done.
It can be used for 10 or 20 years.
So I hope you do not save a few hundred thousand won only to spend several times more on retreatment a year later.
What matters more than laminate cost or price
is who does it, how much time they spend, and how they do it.
I hope today’s explanation helps you make a smart choice.
