Enamel Shaping
Hello.
I’m Kim Moo-jin, the chief director of D-Day Dental Clinic,
and I work in clinical care every day with the goal of painless treatment.

When I treat patients, there are some whose teeth seem fine
but who appear to lack confidence for some reason.
When I ask in detail, most people say something similar.
"My teeth look too short."
"When I smile, too much of my gums show, and it’s embarrassing."
Gummy Smile
A condition in which the upper gums are excessively exposed when smiling
In fact, this is neither tooth decay nor gum disease.
But for the person experiencing it,
it becomes a daily source of stress every time they look in the mirror.
One of the ways to address this concern
is enamel shaping.
Since many people are still unfamiliar with it,
I’ll explain it in detail today.
If you read this post to the end,
you’ll be able to judge exactly what enamel shaping is
and whether it’s the right method for you.
I’ve organized the key points,
so please focus for just a moment.

- Enamel shaping,
what exactly does it do?
Just from the name enamel shaping,
it may sound like some major surgery.
But in reality,
it is a procedure that finely smooths the outermost layer of the tooth, enamel,
to refine its shape.
Anterior gum contouring
Posterior gum contouring
Think of it like trimming and smoothing your nails:
it helps smooth out irregular areas on the tooth surface.
If the spaces between teeth overlap slightly,
or the edges look uneven,
this procedure alone can make the teeth look much more refined.

In particular, for people whose gum line makes the tooth lengths look uneven,
this is a method where you can feel quite a big change.
However, there is an important point here.
Once enamel is removed, it does not grow back.
So the key is to trim only as much as is truly necessary,
and to keep it minimal.
I always take a cautious approach to this part.
Because rather than removing too much aggressively,
even if the result is slightly less than perfect,
protecting tooth health is ultimately far better.
- Why is the gum line
different for everyone?
Even among people of the same age with similar tooth conditions,
some people show almost no gum when they smile,
while others show a lot of gum tissue.
This is because the naturally determined gum position,
the movement of the upper lip,
and how much the teeth have erupted beyond the gums
all differ from person to person.

If the gums cover the teeth too much,
the teeth appear shorter than they actually are.
In this case,
enamel shaping alone may have limitations,
and a separate procedure to refine the gum line may be needed.
On the other hand, if the gum position is normal
but only the shape of the tooth edges is uneven,
enamel shaping alone can be sufficient to improve the appearance.
So before the procedure, I always make sure to examine both the current gum condition and the tooth shape.

Before I actually check a person’s condition in person,
I don’t think it makes sense to decide on a treatment direction first.
Because what you can see with your eyes
and the actual structure are often different,
a thorough confirmation process is essential.
- What must be checked before the procedure
Enamel shaping is considered a relatively simple procedure,
but that does not mean it should be done immediately
without any checks.
The thickness of enamel varies from person to person,
and if an area that is too thin is shaped too aggressively,
sensitivity may occur.
So before the procedure,
✔ whether your enamel thickness is sufficient
✔ whether your gums are in good health
must be checked first.

If there is a place that skips these basic checks
and goes straight into treatment,
you may want to be cautious.
Before performing the procedure,
✔ I explain to the patient what their current condition is
✔ and how much change is possible in advance.
If the actual result differs from what was expected,
both sides can’t help but feel disappointed.
Starting only after everything is understood,
I believe that is the most basic principle.

Some of you may be worried about pain.
Since enamel itself has no nerves,
in most cases the procedure can be done without anesthesia.
Still, if any discomfort is anticipated,
I let you know in advance,
so there’s no need to worry too much.
Let me summarize what we covered today.
Enamel shaping
---
1) It is a procedure that finely refines the tooth surface to improve its shape, and
2) it is one option that can be considered together with concerns about the gum line.
However, because it is not a procedure that applies equally to everyone,
it is important to first accurately check your enamel thickness and gum condition.

That concern that has been bothering you every time you look in the mirror,
don’t carry it alone—please feel free to come in for a consultation.
Once you hear a full explanation,
the vague worry you’ve been carrying will feel much lighter.
