Gangnam-gu Office Station Dentist,
What 99% of People Whose Veneers Fell Off
Missed
Gangnam-gu Office Station Dentist
Hello.
I am Kim Moo-jin, the director of D-Day Dental Clinic, where our goal is to provide treatments with minimal pain.

“Doctor, it hasn’t been long since I had my veneers attached, but one fell off yesterday…”
This is something we hear fairly often in the treatment room.
Some people return after a year,
while others come back after only six months because their veneers have fallen off.
They say they did not apply significant force or bite into anything hard,
but that the veneer suddenly came off one day.

That moment when the front tooth they felt confident about when smiling
is suddenly missing—
You can tell just by looking at the patient’s expression.
It is not only the cost;
the sense of helplessness they feel before sitting in that chair again
is much greater.
Veneers are not finished simply because they have been made well.
If you know the common factors among people whose veneers fall off,
you can greatly reduce regret when making your initial decision.

- When Veneers Fall Off,
It Is Not Actually the Tooth’s Fault
Veneers are a procedure in which

The front surface of the tooth is lightly shaped,
and a thin porcelain plate is bonded over it.
They are usually about 0.3–0.7 mm thick,
which is almost the thickness of a single sheet of paper.

So when they are bonded properly,
the result can look very natural and attractive.
However, the reason veneers fall off is much more often related to
the conditions under which they were bonded

than to the procedure itself.
1
If tiny traces of decay or weakened areas remain on the tooth surface
and the veneer is bonded over them as they are,
that area may begin to lift over time.

2
Also, if you normally have a strong bite,
that force is transferred directly to the veneer,
which can lead to microscopic cracks.
3
Especially people who grind their teeth while sleeping
or unconsciously clench their teeth during the day.
In these cases, the enemy of veneers may not be “food”
but “your own habits.”

- The Common Factors Among People Whose Veneers Fall Off
This is similar to putting up wallpaper.
If the wall is uneven or has slight moisture,
no matter how good the adhesive is, one corner will begin to lift after only a few days.

Veneers are the same.
✔ The condition of the tooth surface
✔ How the upper and lower teeth come into contact
✔ Your usual habits
If these are not checked before bonding,
the same result will ultimately be repeated.
When we collect cases of veneers that have fallen off,
we see surprisingly similar patterns.

✔ People with an edge-to-edge bite
(the upper and lower front teeth meet directly)
✔ People who grind their teeth at night
✔ Cases where treatment was performed directly over an area that had decay
✔ Cases where hard food was eaten before the veneer had settled
after temporary bonding

Most of these are factors that can be adequately prepared for
if they are identified in advance, before the procedure.
For people who grind their teeth,
we provide guidance on using a night mouthpiece,
and for those with a strong bite,
we design the thickness and bonding-surface treatment differently.

Once a tooth has been shaped for veneers,
it is difficult to return it to its original state.
That is why
a diagnosis before the procedure is all the more important.

Why We Examine Things One More Time
Before Bonding
When someone comes in for a veneer consultation,
I do not begin by talking about the design right away.
I first examine the bite,
check for decay and the condition of the gums,
and ask about the person’s usual habits.

Last month, someone came in wanting veneers,
but during the examination, we noticed signs of nighttime teeth grinding.
If we had proceeded as planned,
there was a high possibility that one or two veneers would have lifted within a year.
So we recommended using a mouthpiece first,
observing the situation for about a month,
and then making the decision again.
The patient may have been disappointed that the procedure could not be performed that day,
but ultimately, this was the way to help the veneers last longer.

I believe that a treatment the patient does not understand or accept
is not a good treatment,
even if it is theoretically appropriate.
Because I personally handle everything from the consultation
through the procedure and post-treatment care,

we do not create situations where an explanation is missed along the way
or the patient has to ask another doctor again.
If I were to summarize what I discussed today in one sentence,
it would be this:
When veneers fall off,
it is usually not a problem that begins after the procedure;
in most cases, the outcome was already determined during the diagnosis before treatment.

I understand how helpless you felt
when you first discovered the missing front tooth in the mirror.
I know you do not want to go through that again.
That is why, with veneers,
rather than focusing on “making them look beautiful,”
“creating the conditions that allow you to use them for a long time”
comes first.

I will never tell you to make a quick decision.
However, before you decide,
you should take a moment to examine whether your teeth and habits
are suitable conditions for veneers.
If you take care of just that,
much of the regret can be avoided.

Treatment without pain,
and treatment you can understand and accept.
That is the unchanging standard I follow in my practice.
