― 1. I Thought Dental Implants Were a Once-and-Done Treatment

“Once you get an implant, can’t you use it for the rest of your life?”

This is something we hear very often.

It is both true and untrue.

Well-placed implants are used by many patients for more than 20 years.

On the other hand, some implants become loose after only a few years,

or inflammation develops around them, making retreatment necessary.

There are two main factors that create this difference.

How precisely the condition of the bone and gums was assessed before surgery,

and whether proper care was provided after the procedure.

If an implant is placed forcefully when there is not enough bone,

it may later lead to problems with the stability of the implant.

If you need a bone graft

but simply proceed without one, larger problems may develop later.

That is why dental implants are not a treatment where “Let’s just try it” is an acceptable approach.

Once an implant has been placed, reversing the procedure is not easy.

― 2. Why Does It Matter So Much Where You Get Treatment?

I fully understand why you would start by looking at how much prices differ. However, there is something you should check before comparing prices: whether the person providing the consultation is also the person who will actually perform the surgery.

If an architect designed a blueprint without ever visiting the site and simply handed it over to a construction team, then no matter how good the design was, it would be difficult to respond immediately when unexpected variables arose on-site. Dental implants are the same. What you hear during the consultation may differ from what occurs during the actual surgery, and if the person making decisions at that point is not the doctor who conducted your initial consultation, continuity can be lost.

I personally handle everything from the consultation and surgery to follow-up care. The person in charge does not change midway, and even if the bone condition on the day of surgery differs from what was expected, I can make decisions and respond immediately.

I would also like to address pain in advance. From the beginning, I explain at which stages and to what extent discomfort may be expected. If significant pain is anticipated, I always let you know beforehand and do not force treatment to continue.

There is one principle I consider important in my practice. Treatment that a patient cannot understand and accept is not good treatment, even if it is theoretically correct.

I show you the CT results directly and explain, “Because your bone condition is like this, we will proceed in this way,” until you understand. In some cases, I may even say, “You do not need to have the procedure right now.” If I believe that undergoing the procedure at the current stage would not be helpful, I think it is right to tell you honestly.

After meeting nearly 10,000 patients, I have come to realize that well-executed implants are less uncomfortable than people might expect. Although they may feel unfamiliar at first, many patients say that they come to feel natural, like their own teeth, once they adapt. We take a careful approach from the very first step to provide that experience.

In the end, the most important thing with dental implants is who takes responsibility from beginning to end.
