Acute Pulpitis — 디데이치과
Hello.
I am Oh Tae-hoon, the director of 디데이치과.

A patient called us recently.
They said the pain was so severe
that they could not sleep at all.
They had taken three painkillers,
but said they had not helped at all.
They came to the clinic early the next morning,
and their face was extremely swollen.
It was clear that they had not slept a wink all night.
An examination revealed acute pulpitis.
In fact, I see patients like this very often.
And most of them show a similar pattern.
When many people experience
slight sensitivity or mild pain in a tooth,
they tell themselves, “It’s probably nothing serious,” and ignore it.
Using being busy as an excuse, because they are afraid,
or because they feel the cost would be wasteful,
they keep postponing their dental visit.
But the problem
starts here.
Teeth never improve on their own.
Instead, they get worse as time passes.
Then, one day, sudden
and severe pain arrives.
That is acute pulpitis.
In this article, I will explain in detail
why acute pulpitis develops,
and why it is important to treat it early.
Please focus for just three minutes.
It will definitely help you avoid
unnecessary suffering.

- Acute pulpitis develops
when tooth decay is left untreated
The reason acute pulpitis develops
is really obvious.
It happens because tooth decay has been left untreated.
Tooth decay starts on the tooth’s surface
and gradually penetrates deeper.
At first, only the hard outer surface called enamel is damaged.
At this stage, it usually does not hurt much.
You may only experience sensitivity to cold water occasionally.
So most people think, “It’s probably nothing serious,” and move on.

The problem is that decay-causing bacteria
continue to penetrate the tooth.
Once they pass through the enamel and reach the dentin,
you begin to feel pain little by little.
You may feel a sharp sensation when eating something sweet
or drinking cold water.
This is when you really should visit a dentist.
At this stage, it can still be resolved with simple treatment.
But what happens if you ignore even these symptoms
and continue to leave the decay untreated?
The decay reaches the pulp.
The pulp is the nerve and blood vessel tissue
deep inside the tooth.
When bacteria enter this area,
inflammation develops and severe pain begins.

It is similar to the throbbing pain
you feel when you badly crush your fingertip in a door.
It may even be worse than that.
It hurts so much that you cannot sleep at night,
and painkillers do not help.
What I have noticed while treating patients is that
most patients with acute pulpitis
had already received warning signs several weeks earlier.
Their teeth were sensitive, chewing was uncomfortable,
and they occasionally felt a throbbing pain.
But they thought it was bearable.
Then, at some point,
it suddenly becomes unbearable.
- Why early treatment
is so important
Once the condition progresses to acute pulpitis,
the treatment process becomes much more complicated.
Simple treatment for tooth decay is no longer enough.
Root canal treatment is required.
The inflamed nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth
must all be removed,
then the space must be disinfected and filled with a special material.

Root canal treatment usually requires
two to three visits.
It also takes more time,
and costs considerably more than treatment for tooth decay.
In addition, a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
becomes weakened because its nutrient supply is cut off.
Therefore, in many cases,
the tooth later needs a crown.
By contrast, early-stage tooth decay
is very simple to treat.
In many cases, treatment can be completed in a single visit,
and the cost is around one-third that of root canal treatment.
Most importantly,
the natural tooth can be preserved as much as possible.
So what should you do?
The answer is simple.
If you notice any unusual signs in a tooth,
visit a dentist right away.
-
Sensitivity to cold water
-
Discomfort when eating something sweet,
-
Slight pain when chewing—these are all warning signs.
I always tell my patients this:
The sooner you receive dental treatment, the better.
It takes less time, costs less,
and, above all, causes much less pain.

Whether you choose to tolerate a little pain
or experience severe pain later
is up to you.
Acute pulpitis
naturally develops when tooth decay is left untreated.
It may be obvious, but many people
overlook this obvious fact.
If anyone reading this article
has even the slightest discomfort in a tooth right now,
please do not put off visiting a dentist any longer.
A dental clinic is not a place to fear.
It is a place that helps protect your health.
Do not overlook minor discomfort;
receive treatment early.
That is the surest way to protect your time and money,
and, most importantly, your precious natural teeth.
