Maebong Station Dentist,
Ignoring bleeding gums when brushing can make things worse
Hello.
I am Oh Tae-hoon, director of D-Day Dental,

Have you ever brushed your teeth in the morning,
spat out the foam, and noticed
a pinkish tinge in the sink?
It may startle you at first,
but since there is no pain after rinsing,
you quickly forget about it.
You may simply think,
“I must have brushed too hard,”
and move on.
But if this happens
several times a week,
things are different.
Gums are tissues that generally
do not signal pain easily.
So even when they bleed, there is no pain,
and you keep putting off a visit.
By the time you finally come to the dentist,
I often see cases where the jawbone
has already begun to deteriorate.

If you read this one article to the end,
you can avoid the most common path
of losing teeth because of gum problems.

- Bleeding gums
are not “just normal”
Healthy gums do not bleed
just because a toothbrush touches them.
Bleeding when brushing means
that inflammation has already developed in the gums.

It starts with plaque.
A bacterial film that is not completely removed by brushing
builds up along the gumline,
and over time hardens into tartar.
As this tartar continually irritates the gums,
they swell and become red,
leading to gingivitis, in which they bleed when touched.
The problem comes next.
If it is not addressed during the gingivitis stage,
the inflammation moves deeper into the gums
and down to the bone that supports the teeth.
This is periodontitis.
From this point on, the gums recede
and the teeth begin to loosen.
Yet this entire process
can progress without much pain.
That is the real reason gum disease is frightening.
It is not a condition that brings you in because it hurts;
it brings you in because your teeth have become loose.
- There are stages that scaling alone
cannot treat
“Isn’t scaling all I need?”
That is right.
If it is early-stage gingivitis,
scaling and proper brushing alone
can visibly restore the gums.

However, if the inflammation has
moved deeper into the gums, the situation is different.
Deep pockets, called periodontal pockets,
form between the gums and teeth,
and tartar adheres to the root surfaces inside them.
Scaling performed only on the visible surface
cannot reach that far.
It is easy to understand if you think of a sink drain.
If you clean only the visible part
and leave the filter inside as it is,
smells will rise again within a few days.
The same applies to the gums.
If the cause in the unseen depths is left untreated,
the inflammation will inevitably return.
So at this stage, treatment must include
deep gum treatment to remove tartar from beneath the gums,
and, if necessary, procedures such as intraoral anti-inflammatory treatment.
Accurately determining which stage
your gums are in is half of the treatment.

I want to help you before it comes to tooth extraction
After meeting approximately 10,000 patients,
the moments I found most heartbreaking were
when patients came in holding onto loose teeth
and asked,
“Can they be saved?”
These were teeth that could have been preserved
if gum treatment had begun just a few years earlier.

No artificial prosthesis can be completely
the same as a natural tooth.
That is why, when examining the condition of the gums,
I do not simply look once and finish.
I go through a double-check process
of reviewing the examination results again.
This is partly to avoid recommending
unnecessary treatment,
and partly to avoid missing
the right time for treatment that is truly necessary.
And if treatment is needed,
I show you the examination materials
and explain why it is necessary now
until you understand and are satisfied.
I believe treatment that a patient does not understand
is not good treatment,
even if it is theoretically correct.
In the end, bleeding from the gums
is the earliest voice the gums can raise.
Tomorrow morning, after brushing your teeth,
please look into the sink just once.
If you see a pinkish tinge again,
it may not be because you brushed too hard,
but rather a signal from your gums asking for help.
If you come in before your teeth become loose,
treatment is simpler than you might expect,
and the results are much better.
Treatment that is comfortable and easy to understand.
