In most cases, people who ask this

have actually been experiencing bleeding for quite some time.

They were initially surprised, but after it kept happening, they gradually became accustomed to it,

thinking, 'I guess it's because I'm tired.'

The problem is that bleeding is often the only first signal

our gums send us.

Since there is no pain or significant swelling, it is easy to dismiss.

That is why how you respond to this bleeding

can determine the health of your gums

over the next several years.

1. Bleeding is the first signal

The most common reason gums bleed when brushing

is plaque—the mass of bacteria that builds up

between the teeth and gums.

When it remains along the gum line,

your body triggers an inflammatory response

to eliminate it.

During this process, the blood vessels in the gums become fragile,

so even slight contact can cause bleeding.

In other words, bleeding usually means

not that the gums have simply been injured,

but that inflammation has already begun.

This stage is called gingivitis.

The good news is that gingivitis is an early stage

limited to the gums.

If the cause is removed at this stage,

it can usually return to its original condition.

However, many people simply let this stage pass.

2. There is a line between what can

With gum disease, there is one point beyond which

can eventually cause the entire seam to come apart,

gum bleeding can be treated simply when addressed early,

but if left alone, it can spread to the bone, making treatment more difficult.

Moreover, when tartar accumulates deep beneath the bone,

it cannot be reached with ordinary scaling.

At that point, treatment to clean beneath the gums is needed,

and if it progresses further, it can reach the stage

where the gums must be opened for treatment.

Ultimately, even when the gum disease is the same,

its treatment can be completely different in scope

depending on when you seek care.

repeated scaling alone will not lead to improvement.

Not long ago, one patient said,

Those words have stayed with me for a long time.

I have seen far too many cases

where people delayed gum treatment

and eventually had to have a tooth extracted.

No matter how good an implant is,

it cannot completely replace your natural tooth.

That is why I recommend protecting your teeth

while they can still be preserved.

Bleeding is not something that naturally happens to everyone.

It is the earliest signal your gums send

asking for help.

The bleeding you dismissed by saying,

"Isn't that normal for everyone?"

may actually be an alarm telling you

that this is the last stage at which the condition can be reversed.

most cases can be resolved simply.

I am not telling you that you must come immediately.

However, by the time your gums hurt,

it is often already too late,
