Seonjeongneung Station Dentist: Gum Contouring,
Only for Those Whose Gums Show First When They Smile
Please Read This
Hello.
I am Kim Moo-jin, the director of D-Day Dental Clinic, where our goal is to provide pain-free treatment.

After taking a group photo, there are moments when you zoom in on the screen to look at your face.
When you smile brightly but your gums catch your eye before your teeth,
you may find yourself absentmindedly swiping past the photo.
From that moment on, people gradually begin to change.

You tense your lips when trying to laugh openly,
cover the corner of your mouth slightly with your hand,
and even avoid smiling in photos altogether.
No one has said anything, but you start becoming increasingly self-conscious about your smile.
To the point where you wonder whether smiling comfortably
was really this difficult.
But this is where many people overlook one thing.
They start looking into procedures first, thinking,
“Maybe I just need to have some of my gums removed.”
If you read this article to the end,
you will have a basis for understanding why your gums look that way
and what you must check before undergoing a procedure.

- The reason your gums show when you smile differs from person to person
If 3 mm or more of your gums show when you smile,
it is commonly referred to as a “gummy smile.”
However, even among people with gummy smiles,
the causes can generally be divided into three types.

The first is when the gums cover more of the teeth than necessary.
The teeth are normal in length, but the gums extend downward,
so the teeth look short and the gums look wide.
It is similar to how a picture in a frame can look smaller than it really is
when the frame has a thick border.

The second is when the upper jawbone itself has grown excessively.
The gums and teeth are normal, but the gum line sits lower because of the bone structure.
The third is when the muscles that pull the upper lip upward when smiling act particularly strongly.
The gums and bones are normal, but the movement of the muscles alone causes the gums to show.
The problem is that these three causes all look the same on the surface:
“a lot of gum showing.”
Yet when the cause differs, the solution can be completely different.
- If you remove only the gums without knowing the cause, they may show again
If the gums cover a large portion of the teeth,
contouring the gum line
through gum contouring can increase the visible area of the teeth and produce good results.
Using a laser can also significantly reduce bleeding and discomfort compared with the past.

But what happens if only the gums are removed when the cause lies in the muscles or bones?
It may look somewhat better at first, but because the lips still rise to the same position when you smile,
the gums may become prominent again over time.
Some people actually come to us upset because they underwent gum contouring elsewhere
and saw little difference.

Rather than the procedure having been performed incorrectly,
in many cases the person’s gums were not the actual cause to begin with.
That is why, before calculating how much gum to remove,
I first check whether the gums are truly the cause.
If the procedure does not seem likely to have a significant effect,
I believe it is better to honestly explain other options instead.
- Seonjeongneung Station Dentist:
Why We Ask About Your Smile First
When you come in for a gum contouring consultation,
I ask you about something before discussing the procedure.
I ask when your gums bother you and how you usually smile.
That is because how you actually look when smiling
is much more important than the number of millimeters of gum that show.

We need to see you smile directly to assess whether the cause is the gums, muscles, or bones.
I also personally conduct all consultations and procedures as the director.
In a system where a consultant handles the consultation and the dentist performs the procedure separately,
it can easily become unclear along the way why the procedure is necessary.
Treatment that the patient does not understand or accept
is difficult to call good treatment, even if it is theoretically appropriate.

It is never too late to begin after I have explained everything sufficiently and you understand it.

Ultimately, what matters is not how much gum is removed,
but understanding first why your smile looks that way.
When your gums showed first in a photo
and you swiped past the screen,
perhaps your gums were not actually to blame.
Once the cause is identified accurately,
your smile can become the first thing people notice rather than your gums in the next photo.
Being able to smile comfortably
can change much more of your day than you might expect.
I would like to help you make that change without rushing and in the right direction.
I will explain everything sufficiently and help you make your decision after you understand and accept the plan.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Kim Moo-jin, Director
