only to bring your face closer and check again?

If you had veneers placed a few years ago, your heart probably sank a little at that moment.

They were certainly white and smooth right after the procedure.

You may also find yourself thinking, “ I took good care of them, so why is this happening only to me?”

Because this was a procedure you decided to undergo after making a significant investment, the disappointment of seeing your front teeth darken again can feel especially profound.

You may start worrying about how much retreatment will cost, and wondering whom you can trust this time.

However, the appropriate solution for veneer discoloration depends entirely on where it began.

If you focus for just five minutes,

you will have a better idea of where the discoloration in your front teeth came from and what you should check first.

1. The Veneers Themselves Do Not Become Discolored

“Do I have to give up coffee for my veneers to last a long time?” This is a question I hear very often during consultations, but my answer may be somewhat unexpected.

Ceramic veneers have a dense, smooth surface,

so there is almost nowhere for the pigments in coffee or wine to penetrate. In other words, it is uncommon for the veneer itself to become stained.

Even so, discoloration can clearly occur.

In most cases, however, it begins not in the veneer itself, but at the place where the veneer meets your natural tooth.

Also, if the tooth previously underwent root canal treatment, the inside of the tooth may darken and show through the veneer.

In this case, replacing the veneer will not solve the problem.

Therefore, even when we use the same words—“it has become discolored”— the situation is completely different depending on where it started.

2. The Deciding Point Is Ultimately the “Margin”

At the margin where the veneer meets the natural tooth, there is adhesive resin cement. This is where most problems begin.

Thinking of bathroom tiles makes this easy to understand.

The tiles themselves remain intact even after several years, but it is always the grout between the tiles that becomes dirty.

As resin cement gradually ages over time, it can become darker,

and when coffee or wine pigments seep through microscopic gaps that form at the margin, a dark band appears along the edge.

If the gums also recede little by little, exposing a margin that was originally covered,

the discoloration can become even more noticeable.

That is why I say the longevity of veneers depends on two points.

How precisely the margin was finished at the time of the procedure, and whether that margin was checked regularly after the procedure.

3. At Seoul Forest Station Dental Clinic, Identifying the Cause Comes Before Discussing Retreatment

When someone visits because of discoloration, I do not immediately bring up retreatment.

First, I examine under magnification whether the staining is on the surface, at the margin, or inside the tooth,

and if the cause is unclear, I take another look with a radiograph.

Depending on the cause, the issue may be resolved with simple polishing and margin refinement, while in some cases, the veneer really does need to be remade.

If these possibilities are not distinguished and a replacement is recommended right away, the patient is ultimately the only one who loses out.

If a treatment seems unlikely to be effective, I honestly recommend another approach, even if it does not result in an immediate consultation fee.

This is also the approach I have maintained while meeting approximately 10,000 patients.

I show patients the examination results directly, explain why a particular approach is appropriate, and begin treatment only after they understand.

Ultimately, veneer discoloration is usually not a problem with the veneer itself, but with the margin. That is why identifying the cause must come before treatment.

The night you brought your face close to the mirror to check your front teeth may, perhaps, have been repeating for several months.

Seeing discoloration does not mean that your veneers have failed.

However, it is certainly a signal that it is time for an evaluation.
