I’d like to talk about
the “lower blepharoplasty” procedure
that many people are curious about.
I hope this will be useful for those who are worried about
under-eye sagging or wrinkles,
a tired-looking eye area,
and similar concerns.
✅ When is lower blepharoplasty needed?
✅ How is the surgery performed?
✅ Surgery time and scarring
✅ Possible side effects after lower blepharoplasty and how to deal with them
✅ Ways to improve surgical results and satisfaction
✅ Practical advice on the timing of lower blepharoplasty
I’ll explain these points.
Lower blepharoplasty is
a procedure mainly considered when,
as people age,
the area under the eyes sags and wrinkles form,
or
the under-eye area becomes puffy
and looks tired.
It usually starts to become noticeable in the mid-30s,
and by around the 40s,
most people have it.
When this happens,
it can make you look tired.
Even at a younger age,
if the under-eye muscles are thin or weak,
the area can look like dark circles,
and in such cases,
procedures may also be done to restore a more youthful-looking eye area.
The basic method of lower blepharoplasty is
to make an incision
just below the eyelashes.
This is a location where the scar later becomes barely noticeable.
Then, the protruding fat is moved
to the sunken area
to make the under-eye area flat.
This is called “fat repositioning.”
Finally,
the loosened muscle is
gently pulled and fixed in place.
Lower blepharoplasty generally takes
about 1 hour,
but regarding scars after surgery,
scars
differ slightly from person to person.
In fact, younger people
are more likely to have more noticeable scars,
while older people
tend to have less.
This is due to factors such as
skin laxity
and immune response.
The size of the incision also varies
from person to person.
If someone is younger and needs faster recovery,
or if the sagging is not severe,
the incision may be made a bit smaller,
while for older patients
or cases that need more correction of sagging,
the incision may be made slightly longer.
In fact, scars are
not something you need to worry about too much.
That’s because
they are barely visible.
Right after surgery,
they may look red for a short time,
but women can cover them with makeup,
and for men as well, they are rarely a major issue.
The most commonly known side effect is
ectropion, which means the eyelid turns outward.
This can also happen naturally with aging,
even without surgery.
The eyelids
help hold the eye in place
so it doesn’t spill out,
but as people age,
the muscles weaken and the eyelids become loose.
However, after surgery,
if the supporting force is weak but the pulling force is too strong,
the eyelid can turn outward.
It can also happen when too much skin is removed,
or
in some cases, even if not much skin was removed,
the scar tissue formed during recovery becomes too strong
and pulls the eyelid outward,
but
most cases can be corrected.
For first-time surgery patients,
it seems to occur rarely,
but for revision surgery patients
or those who previously developed ectropion,
there is a possibility of occurrence.
After lower blepharoplasty,
under-eye wrinkles can be
smoothed out almost completely,
or intentionally left slightly.
Depending on the patient’s face,
fully smoothing them may look natural in some cases,
because if the area is made too tight,
it can make the expression look cold
or awkward.
It is important to consider the overall harmony of the face.
Rather than worrying about the under-eye area on your own,
it is best to look at your current under-eye condition
and consult a specialist.
For the timing of surgery,
I recommend consulting a specialist
when you personally feel it is needed.😀
