People often think that eye expression is determined by attitude or state of mind.

It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul,

but in fact, the brightness of that window

is greatly influenced by physical factors.

Medically, there are two main things to look at.

First, the health condition of the eyes themselves.

Second, depending on how much of the eyeball is exposed,

that person’s eye expression is determined.

From a plastic surgery perspective,

the black part of the eye, that is, the pupil and iris,

how visible they are

and how exposed they are is important.

The ideal amount of exposure of the black part of the eye,

which can create the most attractive and bright eye expression, is

based on when the eyes are opened comfortably,

the eyelids slightly covering the upper part of the black area

by about 1 to 2 mm.

If, beyond this ideal state,

too much of the black part of the eye is covered,

we diagnose it as

'ptosis.'

A condition where the eyelids sag

and cover the eyeballs

It is a phenomenon in which the muscles used to open the eyes are weak,

so the eyelids cannot rise sufficiently

and cover the black part of the eye.

When this happens,

the eyes may look sleepy,

look stuffy,

or even cause functional problems

such as blocking the field of vision.

The surgery that corrects this ptosis is called

'eye shape correction surgery.'

It is a slightly different concept from double eyelid surgery.

Eye shape correction surgery strengthens the muscles that open the eyes

or

adjusts the length of those muscles to increase the amount of the black part of the eye that is exposed.

As the black part of the eye becomes more,

and ideally, more exposed,

the eyes appear much clearer and more lively.

In the end, having brighter eye expression means

that the black part of the eye is not covered

and is clearly visible.

Bright eye expression is also a sign of health and confidence.

If you are troubled by dull-looking eyes,

rather than blindly trying to just clean the 'windows to the soul,'

it would be good to consider practical ways to improve

the environment around the eyes.
