The key trend in plastic surgery these days is

without a doubt, “naturalness.”

 Everyone wants to look prettier,

but they also want to avoid unnatural results that look obviously done.

 Especially with eye surgery, even a small change can make a big difference in your appearance, so many people wonder how to preserve their own unique charm while still becoming naturally prettier.

 

When we say “natural-looking eyes,” what feels natural in the end is, I think, “a shape that should exist in nature.”

 For example, when a part that should be curved is too straight, or when a part that should be straight is not, you feel something is off.

 

And another thing is that after surgery, when the implants or changed boundaries added to our body stand out too much, it also feels unnatural.

 Especially in the eyes, the most common unnatural case is “eyes that look as if they are swollen for a long time.”

 But to put it simply, in most cases it happens because the double eyelid crease is too high for the condition of the person’s eyes.

  

Why do high double eyelids look swollen?

 There are various reasons, but there is one especially striking research result:

 a paper states that when the skin length below the double eyelid height increases, swelling occurs in proportion to the “cube” of that height.

 If the height doubles, the swelling can increase eightfold. That is the first reason it looks swollen.

 The second reason is the issue of skin “thickness.”

 The closer to the eyelashes, the thinner the skin, and the higher up, the thicker it becomes.

 A double eyelid is a fold in the skin, but when thick skin folds, it feels much thicker.

 

The third cause is that as the double eyelid becomes higher, the distance from the eyebrow gets narrower.

 When this distance gets narrower, that area can bulge outward, which makes the eyes look swollen.

 As solutions to these three causes,

 

First,

 if the swelling is caused by the double eyelid height, you need surgery to lower the double eyelid.

 Even if you give up some height, if you lower it to a more natural level, you can instead see a much greater reduction in swelling.

 

If the height is reduced by half, you can expect an effect equivalent to the swelling going down eightfold.

 This kind of revision surgery is also fairly common.

Second,

 the puffiness caused by skin thickness can also be resolved by lowering the double eyelid.

 

Third,

 if the area looks puffy because the distance between the eyebrow and the double eyelid is narrow, there are two methods.

   

Either lower the double eyelid, or restore the distance between the eyebrow and the eye through procedures such as eyebrow lift surgery.

   

If the double eyelid line bends in the middle or is uneven,

 it could be a design error, but it could also be due to the patient’s eye movement.

 Eyes without a double eyelid usually often open by using the eyebrows to “lift” the eyes.

 

After double eyelid surgery, these eyebrows fall back down, but in some cases it is difficult to predict exactly how far they will drop.

 As the eyebrow falls, if it presses down on the middle of the double eyelid line, that area becomes angled and looks flattened.

   

Eyes that look sleepy or excessively open also create an unnatural appearance.

 Eyes that open too wide can give a startled impression,

 and sleepy-looking eyes can, if they have a double eyelid, look even more emphasized.

 

The higher the double eyelid line, the greater the chance that ptosis will occur naturally.

 The force that creates the double eyelid and the force that opens the eyes ultimately come from one muscle, and you can think of a high double eyelid as requiring you to lift something “heavier.”

 So the higher the double eyelid is set, the more important eye-opening correction becomes.

 Even if the double eyelid is large, for the eyes to look bright without appearing sleepy, eye-opening correction must be done properly.

   

If the front corner or outer corner of the eye is too overdone, it becomes unnatural.

 Front corner surgery, simply put, is surgery that increases the “lacrimal caruncle.”

 By removing the skin at the inner corner of the eye, it exposes the pink triangular area underneath, that is, the lacrimal caruncle.

 I usually approach it with the ideal that about 70% of the lacrimal caruncle should be exposed.

 The wording may sound strange, but the lacrimal caruncle can also look “ugly.”

 For example, if you expose a lot of a lacrimal caruncle shape that curves downward like a hook, the weakness becomes more obvious and it can look awkward.

Excessive canthoplasty can create angles at the eye corners or cause scars that deform the eye shape into a “ㄷ”-like form.

 Structures that should not be exposed may become visible, or areas that should be round may appear square.

 Aggressive canthoplasty that goes beyond normal anatomy must definitely be avoided.

 Natural-looking eyes, in the end, are about finding the most harmonious height and shape within each person’s unique condition.
