Features of Prominent Eyes and Deep-Set Eyes

Many people say things like:

“Prominent eyes are beautiful.”

“Deep-set eyes are attractive.”

The position of the eyeballs has a major effect on a person’s impression.

Prominent eyes (eyes that stick out)

can make the eyes look brighter and younger,

and create a more youthful impression.

Deep-set eyes (eyes that are set back)

may feel more intelligent or deep,

and have the advantage of giving a more profound impression.

Then you may be wondering

whether your own eyes are prominent or deep-set.

Strictly speaking, this must be measured in an ophthalmology clinic

with specialized equipment.

But roughly speaking,

you can check it yourself by feeling the area.

If you touch the side of your face,

you will feel the firm orbital bone.

The key is to measure the distance between that bone and the most protruding point of the eyeball.

Usually, around 20 mm is average,

but if it is closer than 10 mm,

deep-set eyes are likely.

It may be difficult to measure with a tape measure,

but the difference you feel when looking in the mirror

will definitely be noticeable.

Because prominent eyes are positioned farther forward,

the eyes show more of the eyeball,

so they appear larger.

Even if the eyeball size is the same,

they can look brighter and more open.

On the other hand, deep-set eyes

have more skin covering the eyeball,

which can make the eyes feel smaller.

Perhaps some of you are wondering

whether the eyes could simply be made to stick out more

through surgery so they look bigger.

Surgery to move the eyeball forward

for cosmetic purposes is extremely rare.

It is usually considered only in reconstructive surgery,

such as for orbital fractures.

The important thing is not to change the position of the eyeball,

but to plan the surgical strategy according to your own features.

Prominent eyes have the advantage that

double eyelids form relatively naturally.

Because the eyeball pushes forward,

even if the double-eyelid crease is not made very high,

the crease is still visible when the eyes are open.

That is because less skin covers the crease.

Since less skin overlaps it,

there is an effect of making the eyes look more open than they actually are.

People with prominent eyes should be careful about the following:

✔️ If too much fat is removed,

multiple creases may form,

or signs of aging may appear sooner.

✔️ If the double-eyelid crease is set too high,

the eyes may look even more protruding.

The key is to preserve a “natural line.”

Deep-set eyes have the opposite characteristics of prominent eyes.

The skin tends to cover the double-eyelid line

a lot more.

So if you want the crease to stand out,

you often need to place the line higher than you might expect.

But the problem is that

the space between the eyebrows and the eyes

often looks narrow.

If you create a high crease in a narrow space,

there is a high chance it will look very thick

or unnatural.

So deep-set eyes come to a fork in the road:

✔️ Choose a natural line,

but do not make the double-eyelid height stand out much

✔️ Accept some degree of unnaturalness

and set a higher line

With deep-set eyes, removing a little more fat

is usually not a major problem

and may even be beneficial.

Recently,

using adjunct procedures such as brow lift or forehead lift

to widen the space between the eyebrows and the eyes

can lead to much better results.

And procedures such as outer canthoplasty or lower canthoplasty

are a bit more difficult for deep-set eyes.

Inner canthoplasty is not a major issue.

Canthoplasty is a procedure that expands the gap

between the soft tissue around the outer corner of the eye

and the bone.

However, deep-set eyes

naturally have a narrower space there,

so even if a canthoplasty is performed,

it is difficult to achieve a very large effect.

Prominent eyes are better.

Deep-set eyes are better.

There is no fixed answer.

Each type of eye

has its own atmosphere, advantages, and disadvantages.

What matters is performing surgery with the proper balance

based on your own characteristics.
