Why dental care becomes more important in the cold season
When the cold winter comes, many parts of the body become dry and immunity tends to drop. In fact, teeth are no exception. Winter dental health is a time when more careful management is needed than in other seasons.
Last week, a patient in their late 60s whom I met in the treatment room said this: "Doctor, lately my teeth sting even when I’m just exposed to cold wind. Why is that?" When the weather gets cold, many people complain of tooth pain like this. It is not simply because the weather is cold.
The patient was apparently surprised because symptoms appeared even though they had been taking good care of their teeth.
We take responsibility for your dental health.
What happens to our teeth in the cold season?

In cold weather, the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors becomes large, and dry conditions caused by using heaters continue. This environment reduces saliva secretion in the mouth, and saliva plays an important role in washing away bacteria and preventing acidity. When there is not enough saliva, the risk of cavities and gum disease naturally increases. According to research, if oral dryness persists, the rate of cavities is said to be more than twice as high as usual.
In addition, during this season we tend to seek out warm drinks and soups more often, and alternating exposure to hot food and cold outdoor air can cause tiny cracks in the teeth or trigger sensitivity. To protect dental health in winter, it is important to understand and prepare for these environmental factors. In particular, if your gums have already become weak or if tooth wear has progressed, these symptoms may feel even more severe.
Another point to note is that when we hunch up in cold weather, the habit of clenching our teeth can develop naturally. Clenching or grinding your teeth puts excessive pressure on them, which can worsen cracks or wear. Relaxing and easing the jaw muscles also helps dental health.

3 ways to protect healthy teeth
First, prevent dry mouth with enough hydration
In cold weather, you may not feel as thirsty, so you may drink water less often. However, for oral health, it is best to drink more than 1.5 liters of water a day in small amounts and frequently. Rather than drinking a large amount at once, it is more effective to drink small amounts every 30 minutes to an hour.
Maintaining indoor humidity at around 50–60% also helps. Simply using a humidifier or hanging up a wet towel can help prevent dry mouth to some extent. In particular, if you have the habit of sleeping with your mouth open, using a humidifier becomes even more important. Also, caffeine and alcohol cause diuresis and flush water out of the body, so it is best to reduce them as much as possible.

Second, be careful about sudden temperature changes
Drinking cold air right after hot coffee, or drinking warm soup after eating ice cream, is not good for dental health. Teeth respond sensitively to temperature changes, and sudden differences in temperature can cause microscopic damage to the enamel on the tooth surface. One of the keys to managing dental health in winter is temperature control like this.
When eating, let food cool to an appropriate temperature before eating it, and rather than drinking a hot beverage immediately after going outside, it is wiser to drink it after the temperature in your mouth has returned to normal. In particular, after outdoor activities, it is recommended to wait about 10 minutes after coming indoors before eating. Even small changes in these habits can prevent tooth sensitivity to a significant extent.
Third, practice more thorough oral care
In the cold season, lowered immunity makes gum inflammation more likely. Brushing three times a day is basic, and be especially thorough with brushing before going to bed. If the bristles gently massage the area between the gums and teeth, it also helps blood circulation. It is even better if you use dental floss or interdental brushes to care for areas that a toothbrush cannot reach.
When brushing, it is important to take 2 to 3 minutes and brush carefully. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months, and if the bristles become splayed, replace it sooner. Also, gently brushing the surface of the tongue helps prevent bad breath.

Building proper care habits
If your teeth often feel sensitive, using toothpaste containing fluoride is also an option.
Fluoride helps strengthen the tooth surface and relieve sensitivity. However, if you rinse your mouth too many times after brushing, the fluoride will be washed away, so rinse lightly just once or twice. Some patients also use a method of simply spitting out the toothpaste without rinsing with water after brushing; this method is also effective in increasing the fluoride coating effect.
Also, eating enough fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C is good for gum health. Vitamin C helps strengthen gum tissue and prevent inflammation. However, after eating acidic fruits, it is good for protecting tooth enamel to brush your teeth about 30 minutes later. Brushing immediately after acidic foods can instead damage enamel that has softened.
In winter, it is also good to include foods that help boost immunity. Blue-backed fish, nuts, and green and yellow vegetables are rich in antioxidants and help maintain gum health. In particular, omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and are good for preventing periodontal disease.

Don’t miss your regular checkups
No matter how diligently you care for your teeth at home, there is nothing more important than regular checkups when it comes to protecting dental health in winter. At Etoile Seoul Dental Clinic, we use equipment such as 3D CT and oral scanners to carefully examine areas that are difficult to confirm with the naked eye. A dentist with more than 20 years of clinical experience accurately diagnoses each patient’s oral condition and, when necessary, guides them toward the appropriate treatment plan.
In particular, older adults with weakened gums or people with tooth wear are advised to have regular checkups every 6 months. Problems that can be resolved with simple treatment when caught early may require major treatment if time passes. Even regular scaling can greatly help prevent gum disease.
If you feel burdened by dental treatment, our clinic strives to provide patients with a more comfortable and pleasant treatment environment and to help them receive care with peace of mind through thorough aftercare. Please feel free to contact us anytime if you have any questions.
In cold weather, please pay a little more attention to winter dental care so you can spend the season with a warm smile. We hope you enjoy delicious food and have a season where you can smile brightly with healthy teeth. We support your healthy smile!
