Lee Jang-wook, Chief Director
Hello.
For a healthy smile,
we do our best
at Etoile Seoul Dental Clinic.
Today, I’d like to talk about the differences between Nobon Arch and dentures, which many people are curious about. If you have been using dentures for a long time and are dealing with discomfort, or if you feel your dentures become loose every time you eat and worry they might fall out, I hope this article will be practically helpful.
In the clinic, we often see patients who visit because of discomfort caused by denture use.
As you use dentures over a long period, the jawbone gradually resorbs, which can make the dentures loose and cause them to shift while eating, making it hard to chew properly. Even when going out, you may become cautious about speaking because you worry the dentures might come out, and when eating with family or acquaintances, you may feel inconvenienced by having to choose foods carefully. Many people consider implants, but hesitate because placing implants for all teeth can be costly and requires multiple visits.
We are responsible for your dental health.
"What is the difference between regular dentures and Nobon Arch?"

Many people are curious about the differences between Nobon Arch and dentures. First, regular dentures are removable prosthetics placed on the gums. They are used by people who have lost all their teeth, and they work by fitting closely against the palate and gums. However, as time passes and the jawbone continues to resorb, gaps form between the dentures and the gums.
Then the dentures become loose and shift whenever you chew, causing discomfort. Chewing strength is also often only about 30 percent of natural teeth, so it can be difficult to eat chewy or hard foods. Nobon Arch, on the other hand, is also called a full-arch implant. After firmly placing about 4 to 6 implants into the jawbone, a fixed prosthesis is attached on top.
The most important difference is that it is "fixed."
The biggest advantage among the differences between Nobon Arch and dentures is that, unlike dentures that are taken in and out, it is firmly fixed to the jawbone, so there is less movement inside the mouth. Chewing strength can also be close to that of natural teeth, allowing you to eat a wider variety of foods.
Another important point is that it is often possible to proceed without bone grafting.
Even for people with significant jawbone resorption, the use of 3D navigation technology can make it possible to place implants at special angles.

Daily difficulties caused by denture use
People who use dentures commonly mention some shared difficulties. First, at every mealtime, the dentures move and food gets under them. This causes discomfort, and there is also the hassle of removing and cleaning the dentures after meals. In addition, the longer you use dentures, the more the jawbone continues to resorb, which can change the shape of the face.
Wrinkles around the mouth may become deeper, and the lips may appear to sink inward, making you look older than you really are. Many people also say that their speech becomes less clear, which lowers their confidence when talking. There is also something called implant-supported dentures, which involves placing several implants and then attaching dentures onto them.
This is more stable than regular dentures, but it is still removable, so you have to take them in and out like dentures, and chewing strength is only about 60 to 80 percent of natural teeth. Because of these points, it is important to clearly understand the differences between Nobon Arch and dentures.
How is the Nobon Arch treatment process carried out?
Nobon Arch treatment is carried out in several stages. First, CT imaging and oral scanning are used to precisely assess the condition of the patient’s jawbone and oral structure. During this process, using a 3D navigation system allows us to perform a simulated surgery on a computer in advance. This makes it possible to plan ahead where the implants should be placed and at what angle for stability.
After such an accurate diagnosis and plan are established, the actual surgery is performed. The surgery itself takes about 2 to 3 hours, and the implants are placed precisely according to the 3D navigation plan. If performed using a flapless method, there is no need to make a large incision in the gums, so discomfort can be reduced and recovery may be faster.
One notable point is that a temporary prosthesis can be attached on the same day as surgery. This reduces the inconvenience of having to remain without teeth.
You can carry on with daily life using the temporary prosthesis, and after about 30 days, once the gums have recovered, it is replaced with the final prosthesis. The final prosthesis uses pink porcelain to finely reproduce the color of the gums and zirconia material to create a natural tooth color. Because it is made with aesthetics in mind so that it looks like your original gums and teeth, it can be so natural that other people may find it difficult to tell it is an implant.

How should you manage it after surgery?
Nobon Arch also needs care like natural teeth. You should brush carefully every day and keep the area around the implants clean using dental floss or interdental brushes. Food debris can get trapped and cause inflammation.
It is also important to have regular checkups every six months. By checking the implant condition and the health of the surrounding gums, and receiving scaling, you can use them healthily for a long time.
Early care is also important.
During the period when you are using the temporary prosthesis, it is better to avoid foods that are too hard or too chewy.
After the final prosthesis is attached, you can eat a variety of foods, but you should avoid biting very hard foods or ice. Smoking is also not good for the bone and gum health around implants, so it is better to quit smoking. Although it varies depending on each person’s care, many people use them for more than 10 years when well maintained.

Choose what suits you and improve your quality of life
I would like to say this to those who have endured the discomfort of dentures for a long time. The inconvenience of dentures shifting every time you eat, and the anxiety of worrying they might come out every time you speak, can gradually take away much of the joy from daily life.
But if you properly understand the differences between Nobon Arch and dentures and choose the treatment that suits you, your quality of life can change.
Rather than continuing to endure while hesitating because of age, cost, or fear of surgery, I recommend that you consult thoroughly with the medical staff and find the method that is right for you.
Teeth do not simply serve the function of chewing food. They are precious, present in every moment when we talk with people, smile, and enjoy delicious food. I sincerely hope that you can spend each day happier with healthy teeth.
This has been Dr. Lee Jang-wook, always doing my best for your bright smile.
