Concerns about tooth reduction

Some people are troubled by discoloration or gaps in their front teeth.
They may feel less confident when taking photos or talking. Even if others recommend veneers, it is natural to hesitate when you hear that “healthy teeth must be shaved down.”

Do you understand veneers correctly?
Veneers are an aesthetic treatment in which a thin porcelain plate is bonded to the surface of a tooth to change its color and shape. Similar to applying artificial nails to fingernails, this method attaches a custom-made, thin ceramic shell to the outside of the tooth. The thickness is usually about 0.3 to 0.7 millimeters, so it is very thin. It may be easier to understand if you think of the thickness of a contact lens.
There are many cases in which veneers are considered. Typical examples include naturally dark tooth color, discoloration after root canal treatment, staining caused by long-term smoking or coffee, gaps between teeth, slight misalignment, and damage or wear on the tooth surface. These problems can sometimes be difficult to address with ordinary whitening treatment or orthodontic treatment alone.

Why is tooth reduction necessary?
This is one of the most common questions about tooth reduction for veneers. It is only natural to wonder why healthy teeth need to be shaved down. But there is a clear reason for tooth reduction.
First, it is necessary to maintain a natural thickness after the veneer is bonded. If a veneer is attached without altering the tooth surface at all, it can become thicker than the original tooth, which may cause the lips to protrude and make speech less natural. It is a bit like feeling uncomfortable moving around when you wear several layers of thick clothing.
Second, it is to improve the bonding strength between the veneer and the tooth. A properly treated surface can have stronger adhesion than a smooth tooth surface. This is an important factor related to how long the veneer lasts. You can think of it as similar to roughening a wall surface before attaching tiles.
Third, it is necessary to create appropriate results based on each person’s dental condition. Since every tooth has a different angle and shape, a precise shaping process is needed to achieve results that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally comfortable.

How is the treatment carried out?
Veneer treatment may require several visits depending on the individual’s condition. During the first visit, consultation and a detailed examination are performed. At this time, the patient’s tooth condition, gum health, and bite relationship are assessed comprehensively. The teeth are scanned precisely with a 3D scanner, and the shape and color that would be suitable are discussed together.
At the next visit, the tooth reduction process for veneers is performed. After local anesthesia, the tooth surface is shaped very thinly, usually within a range of 0.3 to 0.7 millimeters. In many cases, this is done within the enamel layer, with the aim of minimizing impact on the teeth. After that, a precise impression is taken and sent to the laboratory for custom fabrication. Temporary veneers are attached to reduce discomfort in daily life.
At the final visit, the completed veneers are bonded. After the color and shape are checked one last time and the bite is adjusted precisely, they are attached with a special adhesive. This process includes a special light-curing step.

What are the advantages of veneers?
One of the characteristics of veneers is that aesthetic changes can be expected within a relatively short period of time. In addition, ceramic material has translucency and gloss similar to natural teeth, so it can look natural. It is also resistant to discoloration over time and can last for a long time with proper care.
They can be applied even in cases of severe discoloration that are difficult to address with tooth whitening, and another advantage is that shape and size can be adjusted at the same time.
Above all, because the amount of tooth reduction for veneers is relatively small, pain and recovery time may vary from person to person. Compared with crowns, they tend to cause less damage to the tooth while still offering an aesthetic effect.

How should you care for them after the procedure?
Veneers also require consistent care, just like natural teeth. Brushing 2 to 3 times a day is basic, and using dental floss should also become a habit. In particular, you should pay extra attention when cleaning the area where the veneer meets the gum line. Food debris left there can cause gum inflammation.
It is better to avoid biting hard foods with the front teeth or chewing ice. Because veneers are thin ceramic materials, they can be damaged by excessive impact. Also, if you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard while sleeping.
Regular checkups are also important. Checking the condition of the veneer, the bonded area, and the health of the surrounding gums, as well as removing tartar through scaling, can help maintain a healthy state. During regular checkups, a veneer-specific polishing agent is used to remove fine surface staining.

Wondering whether tooth reduction for veneers is necessary is a natural concern.
The fear of altering healthy teeth is also natural. However, tooth reduction for veneers, when performed under an accurate diagnosis and a delicate treatment plan, can be one option to consider for aesthetic changes.
What matters most is to understand your dental condition and the results you expect through 충분한 consultation, and to make a careful decision. We will always do our best for your healthy smile.
