Not long ago, someone approaching thirty sat down and said this right away:

“Doctor, honestly, I’m worried about a blind date I already arranged because of my yellowish teeth. Lately, my front teeth have been looking long, so I feel self-conscious every time I smile.” Then, lowering their voice slightly, they added:

“But I heard that getting veneers means grinding down all your healthy teeth. I’m the kind of person who drinks iced Americanos even in freezing weather, so I’m afraid my teeth might become sensitive later.”

I fully understand that feeling. Wanting to change a visible concern but hesitating when told that healthy teeth must be shaved down is an entirely natural response.

Shaping part of your body in a way that cannot be reversed is a weighty decision for anyone. So that day, rather than rushing into an explanation, I first took the time to listen carefully to those concerns.

What Are No-Prep Veneers?

Veneers are an esthetic dental treatment that refines the color and shape of teeth by attaching very thin ceramic shells to their front surfaces.

It may be easier to understand if you picture placing a thin nail tip over a fingernail.

You can also think of it as adding a fine tile over a wall without tearing the wall down.

With traditional veneers, the surface of the tooth had to be lightly shaped so that the shell could sit naturally in place. Even though the amount removed was not substantial, a tooth that has been shaped once cannot return to its original state.

By contrast, Apgujeong no-prep veneers involve adding thin shells after making only the minimum adjustments needed, with little to no reduction of healthy tooth structure.

Because the outer layer of the tooth is disturbed less, there is relatively less concern about sensitivity, and the procedure can often be performed without anesthesia. However, this method is not suitable for everyone.

If the teeth naturally protrude or have deep discoloration, it may be difficult to achieve the desired result with a no-prep method alone, so a detailed examination should come first.

What Options Are Available, and Which Is Better?

Treatment generally begins with an oral scan and diagnosis.

This process creates a three-dimensional model of the inside of your mouth and allows the balance of your smile to be designed in advance. Thin ceramic shells are then made based on this design and precisely attached to the teeth.​

Materials used include porcelain, which resembles the way natural teeth transmit light, and zirconia, which has somewhat greater strength. The material is selected to match the color of the teeth and the gum line.

The greatest advantage of Apgujeong no-prep veneers is that they can refine both the color and shape while preserving as much of your natural teeth as possible. They may be a particularly suitable option when there are small gaps between the teeth, mild discoloration, or uneven front-tooth length.

What I Told That Patient

After listening for quite some time, I looked at the scan screen together with the patient and said:

“We can design this in a way that barely touches the teeth. However, because part of the front teeth protrudes slightly, we also need to consider that balance to achieve a natural result.”

Apgujeong no-prep veneers are not always the right answer, but they were a method that suited this patient’s desire to preserve their healthy teeth.

Rather than guarantee an outcome, I prefer to explain honestly what advantages and disadvantages come with each option. The decision always belongs to the patient.

The Dentist Answers Directly (FAQ)

Q1. Why should I specifically look for an option that does not involve shaving down the teeth?

A. Because a tooth that has been shaped once cannot be restored to its original state. Preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible leaves you with more options if another treatment becomes necessary in the future.

I believe preserving what is yours should always come first.

Q2. I am worried about sensitivity. Is it really less likely with this method?

A. Because the outer layer of the tooth is disturbed less, there tends to be less concern about sensitivity.

However, gum and tooth conditions differ from person to person. If you are particularly sensitive, let us know during the examination so that we can plan accordingly.

Q3. Are there any side effects or limitations?

A. Every treatment has limitations.

The bonded shell may develop slight separation over time or change color, and if the teeth protrude significantly, it may be difficult to create the desired shape with a no-prep method alone. That is why I explain honestly from the beginning which cases are possible and which are not.

Q4. How should I care for my teeth after the veneers are attached?

A. Brush and floss every day just as you would with natural teeth. Simply reducing the habit of biting excessively hard foods with your front teeth can help you use them comfortably for a long time.

Spending time holding back your smile because of a single front tooth can weigh on you more than you might expect. Apgujeong no-prep veneers are simply one way to ease that burden while protecting your natural teeth; they are not a treatment that insists there is only one right answer.
