Root canal treatment is also called “endodontic treatment.” It is a dental procedure in which the damaged nerve and pulp inside the tooth are removed, the space is disinfected, and then filled with a special material. It may be performed to restore function when a tooth has suffered serious damage due to severe decay or trauma.

Root Canal Treatment Process

The root canal treatment process can proceed as follows.

1. Diagnosis and Initial Examination

After checking the inside of the tooth and the condition of the roots through X-ray examination and a clinical examination by the medical staff, the extent of tooth damage was confirmed.

2. Anesthesia

To reduce the burden of pain, the treatment area could be locally anesthetized to lessen discomfort.

3. Removal of Damaged Nerve

The process of removing the nerve and infected pulp inside the tooth was necessary.

4. Root Canal Disinfection

The root canal is disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria.

5. Filling and Sealing

The inside of the tooth is filled with a restorative material, and a temporary tooth or permanent crown is placed to protect the weakened tooth.

Reasons for Pain After Root Canal Treatment

When root canal treatment is completed successfully, the tooth can normally be used. However, some people still feel pain after root canal treatment. Why does pain remain after root canal treatment? It may appear temporarily during the natural recovery process, but pain can also occur for the following reasons.

1. Tissue inflammation

During the root canal treatment process, the tissues around the tooth may be irritated, causing mild pain.

2. Tooth pressure

While the tooth is being handled during treatment, internal pressure may increase, or the root canal filling material may irritate the tissue around the nerve, causing pain to remain after root canal treatment.

3. Sensitivity at the treatment site

Depending on the individual, pain may be felt because of heightened sensitivity. Pain that feels tender when chewing or pressing on the tooth may gradually improve as the tooth heals.

4. Microdamage

Although rare, microdamage may occur during the treatment process, and this can lead to pain.

5. Inadequate treatment process

If disinfection is not done properly during root canal treatment, or if filling and sealing are insufficient, reinfection may occur and cause pain.

How to Manage Pain After Root Canal Treatment

Pain after root canal treatment usually does not require much concern if it is managed properly. Taking the pain relievers prescribed by the dental clinic can also help reduce pain. Using the following management methods together may help control discomfort.

1. Eat soft foods

For a few days after treatment, it is better to avoid hard or chewy foods that place stress on the tooth. Soft foods are preferable.

2. Avoid excessive pressure

It is better to avoid chewing on the treated area. Unnecessary pressure on the tooth can increase discomfort.

3. Maintain oral hygiene

It is recommended to care for the teeth with a soft toothbrush and keep the mouth clean to help prevent infection.

4. Regular checkups

After treatment, it is good to check the condition periodically through regular follow-up examinations.

What If Pain Persists After Root Canal Treatment?
