Can rabbit teeth orthodontics be done with partial correction for rabbit front teeth?
Hello.
I am Oh Su-hwan, the founder and head doctor of Smile D Dental Clinic, and an orthodontic specialist with 18 years of experience.
Prominent rabbit front teeth that show when you smile can be a charming feature,
but if the front teeth protrude too much, they can also cause problems such as malocclusion or speech issues.
There are certainly people who feel stressed every time they look in the mirror because their front teeth stand out so much.
Perhaps those reading this article right now are also searching for information on rabbit teeth orthodontics and partial correction for rabbit front teeth.
In today’s post, I’ve organized what causes rabbit teeth,
and how orthodontic treatment is carried out.
Why do rabbit teeth develop?
Let me explain simply
Usually, permanent canines erupt around the sixth grade of elementary school.
However, if there is not enough space for the canines to come in, they erupt crookedly near the gums, like crowded teeth.
Because canines are large and have long roots, as they erupt,
they strongly push against the front teeth (central incisors) and the smaller front teeth (lateral incisors) that were originally in place.
At this time, the smaller front teeth (lateral incisors) are pushed inward,
and the front teeth (central incisors) protrude farther forward than the smaller front teeth, creating the appearance of rabbit teeth.
Depending on how much space the canines need and how much space is lacking,
this tooth shape may protrude only slightly,
or it may protrude severely.

🦷 What are the prevention and solutions?
If you check the alignment of the teeth in advance through regular dental checkups from a young age, that would be ideal.
If necessary, baby teeth can be extracted early to secure space,
or the alignment can be corrected through rabbit teeth orthodontics (braces).
I will explain next whether partial correction for rabbit front teeth is possible.
For a more accurate diagnosis, it is best to consult an orthodontic specialist.
Can it be done with partial correction for rabbit front teeth?
The problem with rabbit teeth is that the front teeth protrude,
so the key is to straighten the alignment of the front teeth and canines through orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic treatment usually proceeds as follows.
Step 1. Detailed examination and diagnosis (orthodontic treatment plan)
First, the dental clinic performs a detailed examination to check the condition of the teeth and the bone structure.

Panoramic imaging, 3D intraoral scanning, and, if necessary, CT scans are performed to assess
- the roots and positions of the teeth
- the angles of the jawbone and teeth
- tooth alignment and a simulation of the expected post-treatment appearance
- in more complex cases, the condition of the alveolar bone as well
Based on this, an orthodontic treatment plan is established.
At this stage, it is determined whether partial correction is possible or whether full orthodontic treatment is needed.
💡 When is partial correction possible?
✅ When the position abnormalities of the canines and front teeth are mild
✅ When the overall tooth alignment is fine, but only the front teeth protrude
✅ When early correction is performed during the baby tooth stage

If the canines have erupted severely as crowded teeth and a lot of space needs to be secured,
or if there are bite problems because the overall alignment is misaligned in addition to the front teeth,
full orthodontic treatment may be necessary.
Step 2. Placement of orthodontic appliances
(1) In the case of partial correction for rabbit front teeth
Only the protruding front teeth (central incisors and lateral incisors) and the canines are treated.
A small bracket system or Invisalign (clear aligners) is used for treatment,
and it usually takes 6 months to 1 year.

The cost is lower than full orthodontic treatment,
but as mentioned earlier, partial correction is only possible when the crowded teeth or canine position issues are not severe.
(2) In the case of full correction for rabbit front teeth
Treatment must be carried out to align the entire dental arch and correct the position of the canines.
At this time, if the canines have taken up space and pushed the front teeth forward, securing space is important,
so if there is not enough space, a premolar may need to be extracted to create room.
- A very small amount of tooth reduction may be done between teeth to create micro-space, or
- A device to widen the upper jaw may also be used.
Orthodontic appliances such as metal brackets, ceramic brackets, and Invisalign (clear aligners) are used,
and the treatment period usually takes 1 year and 6 months to 2 years and 6 months.
The cost is higher than partial correction, but the overall bite improves.
Step 3. Tooth alignment and bite adjustment
Through orthodontic treatment, the protruding front teeth are moved back to their original position, and the smaller front teeth are aligned properly.
When the canines are also positioned correctly and the dental arch and bite are adjusted,
the front teeth close naturally and the rabbit teeth appearance disappears.
Step 4. Removal of braces and maintenance care (retainers are essential)
After orthodontic treatment, you must wear retainers to prevent the teeth from moving again,
and the wearing period is at least (!) 1 to 2 years.
In addition, it is a good idea to check through regular examinations whether the tooth alignment is being maintained.

So far, we have discussed rabbit teeth orthodontics and partial correction for rabbit front teeth.
If you are wondering whether rabbit teeth orthodontics can be done with partial correction, or about the duration and cost of full orthodontic treatment,
it is best to receive a detailed dental examination and a 3D simulation consultation.
As with all orthodontic procedures, rabbit teeth correction especially requires delicate technique,
so I hope you consult with an experienced orthodontic specialist
to find the treatment method that is most suitable for you.
Thank you.
