Invisible clear aligners may not be effective for these people
Hello.
I’m Oh Soo-hwan, a specialist in orthodontics with 18 years of experience.
These days, more and more people are looking for clear aligners.
That’s because they are not noticeable, can be removed, and are more aesthetically pleasing than conventional metal braces.

However, for some people, they can end up being neither one thing nor the other, and a waste.
In today’s post, I’ll talk about two types of people for whom I do not recommend clear aligners.
If you’ve been considering clear aligners, please focus for just two minutes.
If it is difficult to wear them for more than 20 hours a day
I do not recommend them
Clear aligners must be worn for at least 20 hours a day to achieve the desired treatment effect.
In other words, except when eating or brushing your teeth,
you need to wear them continuously for the rest of the time.
If you do not follow this, the orthodontic effect will decrease and the treatment period will inevitably become longer than planned.

So, for people whose lifestyle makes long hours of wear difficult.
For example, people whose jobs require them to talk a lot or who are in environments where they need to remove their aligners frequently
are not recommended clear aligners because it is difficult to wear them for the full 20 hours a day.
Also, should I call it a lack of willpower?
Since they are not fixed appliances, if wearing them feels uncomfortable, there is always the temptation to take them out.
For people who are not confident they can manage themselves well and resist that temptation,
I tend to recommend another method rather than clear aligners.
In addition, for younger patients, it is often difficult for them to keep to the wearing time on their own,
so I tend to tell parents that fixed braces may be the better choice.

If it is difficult to wear clear aligners consistently,
they may actually become an inefficient treatment,
so it is better to make the decision carefully.
If extraction orthodontic treatment is needed
be cautious
As clear aligner technology has advanced recently,
there are more cases in which they can be applied even when extractions are needed.
However, it is still true that they apply less physical force than metal braces.
In particular, if extraction orthodontic treatment is needed, strong force is required to move the teeth.
Of course, extraction orthodontic treatment can also be done with clear aligners,
but compared with conventional fixed braces, there is concern that the treatment period may be longer.
This is because clear aligners work by applying force gradually,
so closing the extraction spaces can take relatively longer.

In particular, if the tooth alignment is severely off or there is asymmetry,
they may require more time than regular bracket braces.
Moreover, in difficult cases, the effect may be limited.
In cases of severe malocclusion or skeletal problems,
it may be difficult to achieve the desired results with clear aligners alone.
In such cases, fixed braces or surgical treatment may need to be combined.
Therefore, if extraction orthodontic treatment is needed,
it is important to consult thoroughly with a specialist and choose the optimal treatment method for your dental condition.
Choosing the orthodontic method that
suits you is most important
Clear aligners have many advantages, such as excellent aesthetics and convenience, but they are not suitable for everyone.
If it is difficult to wear them for more than 20 hours a day, or if extraction orthodontic treatment is needed, careful judgment is necessary.
Therefore, after comprehensively considering your lifestyle habits, orthodontic goals, dental condition, and other factors,
it is important to choose the most suitable orthodontic method through consultation with a specialist.

I hope that everyone reading this article can make the right choice
and regain a beautiful smile through a satisfying improvement of protruding teeth.
Thank you for reading this long post.
