Apgujeong Dental Clinic: Types of Orthodontic Treatment and Selection Criteria <1-Minute Key Summary>
Hello.
As a board-certified orthodontist recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
I am Dr. Oh Su-hwan, and I have been providing orthodontic treatment for nearly 18 years.

Over the years, while consulting with countless patients about orthodontic treatment, one of the questions I hear most often is:
“Which orthodontic appliance is best for me?”
Some people already know a bit about the different types of orthodontic treatment,
but many are not sure how to choose in a way that leaves no regrets.
So today, I’d like to briefly summarize the key features of the different types of orthodontic treatment,
and explain the main criteria you can use to make a good choice.

Features, pros, and cons of orthodontic appliance types
I’ll explain in detail
There are several types of orthodontic treatment, but I’ll focus on five representative appliances that patients often ask about and choose most often.
<1> Metal braces
This is the most basic and traditional orthodontic method.
Metal brackets are attached to the outer surface of the teeth and connected with wires to move the teeth.

Because the structure is simple and the method has been proven over time, it is well suited for achieving predictable treatment results,
and the relatively low cost makes it a common choice for students and younger patients.
However, since the metal is visible, some people feel self-conscious because it stands out aesthetically.
<2> Ceramic braces
These are orthodontic braces that use translucent brackets similar in color to the teeth, making them less noticeable than metal braces.

They are generally more esthetically pleasing than metal braces.
However, ceramic material is hard like glass but more prone to breaking, so caution is needed,
and because it has more friction than metal, treatment may take a little longer in some cases.
Also, the cost is usually about 200,000 to 300,000 won more than metal braces.
<3> Lingual braces
This method places the appliance on the inner side of the teeth, so it is not visible from the outside.

It is the most esthetic option and creates almost no concern about exposure in daily life during treatment.
However, because the appliance is attached where the tongue touches, speech may be unclear or uncomfortable for the first 2 to 3 weeks.
It is also relatively expensive.
<4> Self-ligating braces
These are appliances with a small door (clip) on the bracket, allowing the wire to be secured without being tied separately.
They can be used in combination with metal or ceramic braces.

Because there is less friction, tooth movement can be relatively faster and treatment time may be shortened.
Pain during wire adjustments is generally less,
and follow-up intervals can be scheduled a bit farther apart, which is helpful for busy people.
<5> Invisalign
This is one of the most popular types of orthodontic treatment these days.
It uses clear plastic trays (aligners) to move the teeth,
and no appliance is permanently attached.

Like lingual braces, it is not very noticeable, so there is less burden from appearance,
and because it can be removed freely, it has many advantages in terms of hygiene management.
The issue is the patient’s level of cooperation.
It must be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day to be effective, so the patient’s commitment is important.
In addition, it may be limited in complex malocclusions, and it is also one of the most expensive options.
Each type of orthodontic treatment has clear characteristics, pros, and cons.
It’s not simply that more expensive means better, and a well-known method is not necessarily the right one for you.
So when we provide consultations at Apgujeong Dental Clinic,
we emphasize that the key is to choose the appliance that truly fits the patient by considering all factors such as
occupation, age, lifestyle habits, and expectations for treatment duration.
What you consider important
is the key

So, among all these types of orthodontic treatment, which one is right for me?
Many people think the treatment outcome may differ depending on the appliance, but that is not the case.
Whether you choose metal braces or Invisalign, if an orthodontic specialist plans and carries out the treatment accurately according to the case,
the results can be almost the same.

So what matters most is not the appliance itself, but the following two things.
- What criteria do I consider important?
“I want it to be not visible.” → Invisalign, lingual braces
“I want to finish as quickly as possible.” → self-ligating braces, metal braces
“I want to save on cost.” → metal braces
“I want it not to be burdensome for work life.” → Invisalign, ceramic braces
“Is there a method possible without tooth extraction?” → diagnosis is more important than the appliance
It is really important to first organize your lifestyle patterns, personality, and priorities in this way.

- Did you communicate sufficiently with the medical staff?
Meanwhile, the most common dissatisfaction when choosing an appliance at Apgujeong Dental Clinic is when the choice is made passively without much thought.
“At the time, I didn’t really know much, so I went with the recommendation, but now that I think about it, that appliance probably wasn’t right for me.”
That is why, during consultations, I explain several possible treatment scenarios,
and after honestly discussing the pros and cons, cost, and duration of each,
I make sure the patient can understand them and choose directly.
A one-sided approach where the medical staff simply says, “Do this one,”
often lowers satisfaction with the outcome.
There is no single correct answer to which appliance to choose.
But there is a wise choice that suits you.
At Apgujeong Dental Clinic, we do not push only one appliance,
and instead propose a variety of treatment options that fit each patient’s situation.
If you are wondering which appliance might be right for you, please feel free to come in for a consultation,
and have a comfortable conversation with us.
