I thought Invisalign didn’t need screws,
but apparently they’re necessary..

Many people looking for a Seoul orthodontic clinic
think of Invisalign as a convenient, discreet orthodontic treatment.
That is, of course, true.
But you should know that it does not apply perfectly to every case.
And depending on the situation, even during Invisalign treatment,
mini-screws in the shape of screws may be placed as well.

Hello.
I’m dentist Oh Su-hwan, and I have treated more than 4,000 orthodontic cases over 18 years without a single medical accident.
Today, for those considering clear aligners,
I’ve put together a summary of Invisalign’s pros and cons, as well as why Invisalign screws are used.

Are there disadvantages to Invisalign too?
Compared with conventional bracket orthodontics, Invisalign is a clear aligner system that is more aesthetic and less uncomfortable.
It is also the orthodontic method our Seoul orthodontic clinic receives the most inquiries about.
First of all, one advantage is that the braces are not very noticeable.
As shown in the photo below, it is almost impossible to tell whether it is being worn unless you are looking closely.

It is also removable, so it is convenient when eating or brushing, and oral hygiene is much easier to manage.
Because there are no fixed wires or brackets in the mouth, there is also no risk of oral wounds.
In particular, the poking or rough irritation that can occur on the inside of the cheeks, the tongue, or the lip lining is definitely less than with bracket orthodontics.

But it does not only have advantages.
If you look more closely,
there are also several Invisalign drawbacks that patients actually experience.
First. If worn for too little time, orthodontic results decrease
The rule is to wear it for at least 22 hours a day.
If it is not worn properly, the planned tooth movement will not occur.
Second. There may be limitations for complex bite problems
Recently, people say there is no orthodontic treatment that cannot be done with Invisalign,
but in cases such as severe protrusion, severe malocclusion, or asymmetry problems,
when precise tooth movement is needed, it is difficult to achieve the desired results with Invisalign alone.

In particular, because the force used to pull teeth upward or move them downward is weaker than with brackets,
there may be cases where mini-screws, also called Invisalign screws, are needed.
Why are Invisalign screws used?
The mini-screws used during Invisalign treatment are small screw-shaped devices.
They look like this.

They are auxiliary tools that are fixed to the jawbone to move teeth effectively.
For those who visit our Seoul orthodontic clinic,
you may be surprised and ask, “Why are screws used for clear aligners?”
When teeth need to be pulled backward (protrusion, space closure after extraction, etc.)
When molars need to be pulled upward (open bite, etc.)
When tooth rotation or vertical movement is needed
In bite adjustment situations that require precise anchorage
In situations like those above, using Invisalign screws appropriately can lead to good treatment results.
In other words, they are used as an option to supplement the direction and strength of orthodontic force,
not because Invisalign is lacking or has failed.
Meanwhile, some people worry that placing a screw into the gums must be very painful.
In fact, insertion is finished in about 30 seconds, and because it is done under local anesthesia, there is almost no pain.

Of course, once the anesthesia wears off, there may be a dull ache,
but this pain usually disappears on its own after a day or two.
After the treatment, the area where the screw was removed will return to normal as the gums and jawbone fill in over about 3 months,
so you do not need to worry about that either.

At our Seoul orthodontic clinic,
we show the treatment plan that includes screws in advance through a 3D simulation,
so we help you understand what role they play and at what stage they are used before moving forward. :)
Invisalign definitely has many outstanding advantages,
but it is not a magic device that solves every problem on its own.
In particular, protrusion, open bite, and asymmetry problems
may require the help of an additional device, Invisalign screws.
But rather than being a drawback, this is a way to increase treatment precision.
Choosing a Seoul orthodontic clinic that explains these elements as part of the plan
can be a way to improve treatment success.
If you’re wondering what Invisalign’s drawbacks are and whether you need Invisalign screws too,
you can start with a precise diagnosis tailored to your teeth and facial shape at our Seoul orthodontic clinic.
This has been Smile D Dental Clinic’s representative director, Oh Su-hwan. Thank you.
