Protruding Mouth Correction Is Also Possible with Invisalign <Written by a Specialist with 18 Years of Experience>
My mouth looks like it sticks out when I smile,
and it’s so stressful.
I’m even afraid to take photos..
I am Oh Su-hwan, an orthodontic specialist with 18 years of experience, who has treated more than 4,000 orthodontic cases so far
with not a single medical accident.

Protruding mouth is one of the most frequently consulted concerns in orthodontic treatment.
It is also the case I have treated most often so far.
In fact, a protruding mouth can significantly affect one’s impression in terms of appearance.
That is why many people say they deliberately keep their mouth closed when taking photos, or feel that their smile looks awkward.
But when they actually try to start orthodontic treatment,
“Will I have to have teeth extracted?”
“Metal braces feel a bit burdensome. Is there a less noticeable option?”
These kinds of concerns naturally come up as well.
So today, for those of you considering correction for a protruding mouth,
based on what I actually explain during consultations, I’ve organized the key points you should know about 1) whether extraction is necessary and 2) whether Invisalign is possible.
I’ll give you clear answers to each, so please follow along closely.

Is tooth extraction always necessary for a protruding mouth?
Many people think that when it comes to protruding mouth correction, extraction is always required.
Of course, in cases where the front teeth protrude severely or the lips stick out a lot,
it is true that extraction is often recommended.
But orthodontic treatment is not simply a matter of extraction vs. no extraction.
Whether the mouth looks protruded because of the arrangement of the teeth, the position of the jawbone,
or the protrusion of the jawbone itself can completely change the treatment plan.

For example, if the teeth are tilted forward but the protrusion is not severe,
just gently moving the teeth inward can significantly change the lip line.
In such cases, good results can be expected without necessarily extracting teeth.
On the other hand, if the protrusion is severe and the dental arch is already full, leaving not enough space, extraction may be needed.

If there is no space to move the teeth backward and you force them inward,
the teeth may instead tilt further forward, or the tooth roots may be stressed.
In that case, creating space through partial extraction can produce a safer and more aesthetically pleasing result.
In the end, the key is not whether extraction is done,
but whether a customized plan is made according to your tooth structure and bone condition.
That is why, during diagnosis, we perform a precise 3D scan together with X-ray analysis,
and we always determine extraction as minimally as possible,
based on the most natural long-term result.

Can a protruding mouth be corrected discreetly with Invisalign?
To give you the conclusion first,
yes. These days, many cases of protruding mouth can be sufficiently improved with Invisalign.
In the past, there was a perception that clear aligners had difficulty with complex tooth movements,
but technology has advanced a great deal now,
and Invisalign’s predictability and precision in tooth movement have improved significantly as well.
In particular, for protruding mouth correction that requires posterior movement of the teeth,
the advantages of Invisalign, which can design the appliance by calculating the exact movement distance and angle, can stand out even more.

In addition, Invisalign is hardly noticeable in everyday life,
and because it can be removed when eating, oral hygiene management is much easier than with metal braces.
That is why satisfaction tends to be high among those who choose Invisalign.

Of course, Invisalign cannot be applied to every protruding mouth case,
and there may be limitations depending on the shape of the alveolar bone and the bite condition.
So it is best to check in advance through 3D scanning and simulation whether Invisalign correction is possible and, if so, how much change is possible.
That is why we also simulate whether protruding mouth correction is possible with Invisalign,
based on an actual tooth model, and show it to you directly,
while transparently explaining the available options.
If you watch the video below,
you will be able to see more specific details about Invisalign protruding mouth correction cases and its advantages. :)
Is protruding mouth always extraction? Always metal braces? No.
