I’m thinking of starting because I heard clear aligners are good.
But honestly, if it takes too long, I think it would be hard,
and if it hurts, I’m worried it might be inconvenient in daily life.
Invisalign is popular among office workers and students because it is barely noticeable from the outside,
but once you actually try to start, worries naturally come along with it.
Especially for those who are getting orthodontic treatment for the first time,
I think you may hesitate with concerns like,
"Won’t it take longer than I expect?" and "I heard it hurts less than braces, but is that really true?"
It’s only natural to have these concerns since it feels unfamiliar at first.

Hello.

Today, in the same way I explain it to my patients,
I’ll simply explain the key points you need to know about Invisalign treatment duration and Invisalign pain.
If you’re thinking about Invisalign, please take just 2 minutes to read this.
It will help answer your questions. :)

How is Invisalign treatment duration determined?
Invisalign is ultimately a treatment that moves teeth.
The principle is different, but the essence is still orthodontic treatment, so the treatment period is similar to that of general braces.
That’s why, when people ask, “How long does Invisalign take?”
it’s difficult to give a simple answer like a few months or a few years.
The most accurate way to understand it is that it depends on the patient’s current dental alignment and the target result.

For example, if the teeth are relatively well aligned and you only need a slight adjustment to the front teeth,
it may be finished in 6 to 10 months.
On the other hand, if there is severe protrusion, crowded teeth, or if molar position adjustment is also included,
it may take 1.5 to nearly 2 years.
Also, daily wearing time is extremely important with Invisalign.
The basic rule is to wear it for more than 20 hours a day.

Depending on how faithfully you follow this, the treatment may end sooner or later than expected.
In other words, rather than asking, “How long does Invisalign take?”
the more important question is, “How consistently can I wear it in order to meet my orthodontic goals?”
In practice, some patients come in smiling and say, “It finished sooner than the treatment plan,”
while others worry and say, “I think it’s getting delayed because I’ve been forgetting to wear it lately.”
That’s why, before orthodontic treatment, we first show an expected simulation through a digital scan,
and then decide together on the most suitable method among the various orthodontic options based on the patient’s lifestyle.

Invisalign is not always the answer.
For any orthodontic method, the basics are an accurate diagnosis and a strategic treatment plan,
and only when it also fits the patient’s daily life can it lead to a shorter treatment period and better results.
Does Invisalign really not hurt?
I hear Invisalign doesn’t hurt?
This is also a question I hear very often.
To be precise, it is true that it is definitely more comfortable than braces.
Because metal brackets do not scrape the inside of the mouth or cause sores,
the physical pain from cuts on the lips or inner cheeks is almost nonexistent.

However, there is still some pressure when the teeth are being moved.
Especially during the first few days after switching to a new aligner,
you may feel a strange pulling sensation or a heavy pressure.
This is a very normal physiological reaction that occurs as the teeth begin to move.
It may feel unfamiliar at first, but for most people it naturally goes away after a few days.
Also, since you remove the aligners when eating, discomfort from chewing is reduced as well.

For those who want to reduce the stress caused by eating habits during orthodontic treatment,
this can be a very big advantage.
Of course, if you are sensitive to Invisalign pain, you may need some time to adjust at first.
In that case, eating soft foods or rinsing your mouth lightly with cold water can help relieve the pressure on the teeth,
making it much easier to get through.
Invisalign is an aesthetic treatment with excellent convenience, but the basic principle is the same as orthodontic treatment.
In other words, to move the teeth safely,
a certain amount of time and discomfort must be accepted, and planning and management are just as important.
Many of the patients I treat also
initially choose Invisalign because they think it is a “comfortable and simple orthodontic treatment,”
but once they actually try it, they say, “This is really a treatment that needs to be managed very carefully.”

I, too, have been performing more than 4,000 orthodontic treatments over 18 years near Sinsa Station in Gangnam,
and I always feel that Invisalign is a treatment that requires precise and professional planning.
