When you touch it with the tip of your tongue,
The gum inside the molar is swollen and hurts when pressed.
Why does that happen?
There are times when you do not pay much attention to it in everyday life, and then suddenly your gums swell up with pain.
Have you ever experienced that too?
In particular, the inside of the gums is hard to reach, so it is difficult to check it often.
If the swelling is left for too long, it can lead to bigger problems, so caution is needed.

This kind of symptom may simply be gum inflammation, or it may be caused by a problem around a wisdom tooth,
or by inflammation at the tip of the tooth root, among various other reasons.
The problem is that if you do not know the cause and let it pass,
the symptoms can worsen,
and the treatment period and difficulty can become longer.
Today, at Smile D Dental Clinic, which has been in the same location near Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Station for 18 years,
we will explain what causes painful swelling on the inside of the gums and how to respond.
If you have been worried about swelling inside your gums, please take a little time to read on. :)

What causes swelling on the inside of the gums? What is the main cause?
The most common causes of painful swelling on the inside of the gums can be divided into the following three categories.
- Periapical periodontitis, inflammation at the tip of the tooth root
When bacteria invade the tip of the tooth root, swelling inside the gums and pain can occur.
It often happens again in a tooth that has had root canal treatment before,
or when a cavity has progressed deeply and the inflammation spreads all the way to the root tip.

At first, it may swell without pain, but when pressed it may throb, or pus may come out intermittently.
- Inflammation around a wisdom tooth, pericoronitis
In particular, lower wisdom teeth often do not fully erupt and remain covered by the gums.
When food debris or bacteria build up around the gum tissue near a wisdom tooth, inflammation develops,
and it is common for this to cause swelling and pain on the inside of the gums.
Many of the patients who visit us saying their jaw is swollen and painful near the back of the mouth or the inside of the tongue fall into this case.
- Chronic periodontitis, gum disease
Areas that are difficult to clean well, especially the inside of the molars, are prone to tartar buildup and inflammation.

Over time, this can progress to periodontitis, which causes swelling of the gums and even damage to the bone,
and in this case too, painful swelling on the inside of the gums can appear repeatedly.
It may be painless at first, but once the bone starts to dissolve, pain when pressing on it or a dull, sensitive feeling can occur.
Is it just simple swelling? Signs you should definitely check
Having swelling on the inside of the gums does not necessarily mean it is something serious.
However, if the following symptoms are present as well, we recommend getting an early diagnosis.
It keeps happening repeatedly
If the same area swells and goes down again at intervals of a few weeks or months,
it means the inflammation in that area has become chronic.
In particular, inflammation at the root tip and wisdom tooth problems often cause repeated symptoms.

There is pain when pressed / It feels sensitive when chewing
If it is just simple gum swelling, there is usually no pain.
On the other hand, if the cause is root inflammation, you may feel a stabbing, throbbing pain when pressed, or discomfort when chewing food.
In such cases, it is difficult to improve with medication alone.
Pus or blood comes out from inside the gums
If white pus comes out when pressed, or if blood-tinged saliva keeps appearing,
it means a bacterial infection is already in progress inside the gums.
In this case, scaling or brushing will not solve the problem, and root canal treatment or gum treatment may be needed.

As you can see, swelling inside the gums may be a problem that starts deep within the tooth structure,
so an accurate diagnosis is needed.
The deeper the area is and the harder it is to check from the outside, such as around the tooth root or a wisdom tooth,
the more important it is to diagnose and treat it early.
It may simply be swelling, but if it keeps recurring or there is pain, it may mean the inflammation has become deeper.
After diagnosis with CT or X-ray, treatments such as root canal treatment, gum disinfection, or wisdom tooth extraction
can help you recover much faster when performed according to the cause.
