Gum Recession, Tooth Notching: Causes and Solutions <Must Read in 1 Minute>
Hello.
Based on experience with more than
5,000 cumulative procedures,
I have designed smiles for each and every patient.
A smiling dentist,
Oh Soo-hwan, CEO of SmileD Dental Clinic.

"I didn’t even know I had tooth notching.
Now that I know, it bothers me every time I look in the mirror,
every time I smile."
In fact, these symptoms do not only appear as people get older; they also appear fairly often in younger people.
In particular, strong tooth brushing or a habit of grinding your teeth,
and after orthodontic treatment or prosthetic work, there are many cases where the gums recede and the tooth roots become exposed.

Especially among people who have had orthodontic treatment for a long time, many are concerned that "the gums around the lower front teeth have receded and the roots are showing."
In fact, on the green search portal as well, questions such as “gum recession after orthodontics” and “tooth notching after prosthetic treatment” are steadily being posted.

On the surface, it may look like a simple cosmetic issue, but if left untreated, it can cause greater discomfort than cavities.
Today, I will explain why gum recession and tooth notching occur, and how SmileD Dental Clinic approaches them.

Why do gums recede and teeth become notched?
Gum recession is, quite literally, the condition in which the gums that cover the tooth roots sink down and expose the roots.
There are various causes.
- Habit of brushing too hard
Brushing with too much force irritates the boundary between the teeth and gums, causing notching.

- Teeth grinding or clenching
When you unconsciously grind your teeth at night, the teeth can chip or become notched, and the gums are pushed back as well.
- Gum disease (periodontitis)
When inflammation reduces the bone, the gums naturally recede.
- Malocclusion
If the teeth are crooked or orthodontic treatment has not been perfectly completed, excessive force is placed on certain teeth, causing notching.

In fact, gum recession rarely occurs from orthodontic treatment alone.
However, if oral hygiene is not properly maintained while brackets are attached,
bacteria can easily multiply,
and in that process, gum inflammation can occur.
If this inflammation repeats, it can eventually lead to the gums gradually receding and the tooth roots being exposed.
Tooth notching is especially common in areas where the gums have receded.
When dentin, which is weaker than enamel, becomes exposed, sensitivity becomes more severe,
and if it progresses, it can reach close to the nerves and cause pain.
In other words, the important point is that this is not merely something that looks bad, but a warning sign for oral health.
You have to address the cause to prevent recurrence
Treating gum recession and tooth notching without a clear solution to the underlying cause,
and simply filling or whitening the area, will not last long.
You have to address the cause in order to prevent recurrence.
That is why, at SmileD Dental Clinic, we provide care in the following steps.
- Precise diagnosis with a 3D oral scanner and CT
We do not look only with the naked eye; we check the occlusion and the tooth-gum structure with digital equipment.
To provide customized treatment, we need to identify "why only this area has receded."

- Minimal reinforcement only where needed
Notched areas of the teeth are filled with resin, or in some cases, laminate or prosthetic treatment is performed.
But we do not recommend it indiscriminately.
The rule is to treat only the areas that truly need it and preserve as much of the remaining tooth as possible.
- Teeth grinding or occlusion adjustment
If the cause is teeth grinding, we may make a mouth guard.
Also, if the bite is misaligned, we address the issue long term through a precise orthodontic consultation.

- Responsible for aftercare as well
Treatment is only the beginning.
We personally explain proper brushing methods and gum care, and we also check the progress regularly after treatment.
With the principle that "conscience is skill,"
we recommend only the treatment that is truly necessary and take responsibility for the results as well.
Because of this, we have been able to continue practicing without accidents for 18 years, and patients continue to visit us with peace of mind.
Gum recession and tooth notching are not issues that can simply be dismissed as due to age or habits.
If the cause is accurately identified and managed early, they can be sufficiently improved and progression can be prevented.
SmileD Dental Clinic is well known for orthodontics,
but we also take responsibility for and manage gum problems or tooth notching that may occur before and after orthodontic treatment.
If, while looking in the mirror,
"I think my gums have receded a bit too"
"My teeth are notched, and it bothers me when I smile"
if you are thinking this, please contact us.
We will help guide you through the clinic use process.
This has been SmileD Dental Clinic. Thank you.
