"Doctor, I have a small cavity.
Can’t I just leave it alone and have it get better?"
Most patients think that if a cavity has only just started, it will not become serious right away.
At first, they think they can just avoid hard foods,
or simply brush a little more carefully.
But in fact, cavities are difficult to heal naturally.
Even in the early stage, they gradually deepen over time,
and once they finally reach the nerve, both the pain and the difficulty and cost of treatment rise sharply.
That is why it is most important not to leave even a small cavity untreated, but to manage and treat it according to its stage.

Today, I will easily explain why cavities are hard to heal naturally and how to treat them by stage.
If you are worried about cavities,
reading to the end may help you naturally move beyond just gathering information and into actually choosing a clinic and getting a consultation. :D

Cavity stages and
why cavities are hard to heal naturally?
Let’s briefly go over the cavity stages first.
In the beginning, it starts with the tooth surface enamel appearing white and discolored.
Or yellow-brown spots may be observed.
At this stage, many people ask, "Can’t it improve if I just brush well?"

But once enamel is damaged, it does not regenerate like bone.
So you should consider cavity healing naturally to be virtually difficult.
If it progresses further, the damage spreads beyond the enamel to the dentin.
From this point on, sensitivity and discomfort when eating sweets begin.

If the treatment time is missed, the cavity digs into the nerve and causes severe pain.
Eventually, root canal treatment becomes necessary, and in some cases the tooth may even need to be extracted.

What patients misunderstand most is the idea that "it’s okay because it doesn’t hurt yet."
Cavities may already be progressing even if there is no pain.
There is usually almost no pain until they get close to the nerve.
That is why many people rely on their own judgment without regular checkups and miss the right time for treatment.
We carefully check so that even early cavities are not missed,
and we guide patients to the most appropriate treatment method according to the cavity stage.
Even in the early stage, we do not simply fill the cavity; we also consider the patient’s lifestyle habits and oral condition
to focus on managing things so that the cavity does not recur.
Treatment methods and precautions by cavity stage
Cavity healing naturally
The treatment method changes depending on how far the cavity has progressed.
From the patient’s point of view, the biggest questions are, "How far has it progressed?" and "How complicated will the treatment be?"
So let me explain the treatment methods by cavity stage.
Stage 1, early cavity
If only the enamel is damaged, progression can be slowed or prevented with resin filling or fluoride application.
We use materials that are as similar as possible to the color of the tooth, so the result looks natural and is not noticeable.

Stage 2, mid-stage cavity
If the cavity has progressed to the enamel and dentin, sensitivity and discomfort occur.
Because the damaged area is larger, resin alone is not enough, and restorative treatment such as an inlay or onlay is needed.
This is the stage where we are not simply filling the tooth, but redesigning its shape and function.

Stage 3, advanced cavity
If the cavity approaches the nerve, the pain becomes severe, to the point that it is hard to sleep at night.
In this case, the inflammation inside the tooth must be removed through root canal treatment.
After root canal treatment, the tooth becomes weaker, so it should be finished with a crown.

Stage 4, a stage where the tooth cannot be saved
If the tooth is severely broken or the inflammation has spread to the surrounding bone, extraction must unfortunately be considered.
In such cases, replacement options such as implants or bridges are explained,
but if possible, we try to preserve the natural tooth as much as we can.
In the end, if a cavity is found early, it can be treated simply, but if it is found late, both the treatment and the cost become larger.
As mentioned today, cavity healing naturally is impossible.
It will not get better on its own, and it will never wait.
If you suspect a cavity, the first step is to check which cavity stage your tooth is currently in.

At Smile D, with thousands of treatment cases over 18 years,
we recommend only the treatment that is truly necessary and manage patients thoroughly even after treatment.
If you are currently experiencing symptoms such as "tooth sensitivity, food constantly getting stuck, or color changes,"
there is a high possibility that the cavity stage is already progressing,
so we recommend getting a checkup as soon as possible.
If you contact us, we will help with guidance on how to use the clinic, so please feel free to reach out.
