I’ve never smiled brightly.
Every time I smile, I’m self-conscious about the gap between my front teeth.

Hello,
this is Smile D Dental Clinic.
When you take a photo while smiling widely, the gap between the front teeth stands out especially. In moments when people’s attention is focused on you, such as a job interview or an important presentation, you may unconsciously cover your mouth.
If your front teeth are spaced apart, this can lower your confidence and become a small but real source of stress in daily life.
The ways to address this so-called “bunny teeth” or “gap between the front teeth” are broadly known as resin and orthodontics.
-
Resin: The gap can be filled relatively affordably within a day.
-
Orthodontics: This addresses the root cause, but takes more time and money.
Many people already know this much.
So they often make a hasty decision, thinking, “I’ll just go with the fast and cheap resin!” or “If I’m going to do it anyway, orthodontics!”
But did you know that decision could lead to even bigger regret 10 years later?
Today, rather than simply listing the pros and cons of the two methods,
I’ll honestly organize the fundamental reasons for why each method is appropriate in different cases, and the criteria for making a wise choice.
Why did my front teeth become spaced apart?

To properly treat spaced front teeth, identifying the cause before the symptom is more important than anything else.
That’s because treatment that ignores the cause is like pouring water into a bottomless bucket.
Cause 1. When the teeth are smaller than the available space (microdontia)
This is a case where each tooth is congenitally smaller than the size of the dental arch formed by the jawbone, leaving extra space and creating gaps.
Cause 2. When there was an unnecessary tooth in the middle (supernumerary tooth)
This is a case where an unnecessary tooth (supernumerary tooth), in addition to the normal teeth, is impacted between the front teeth. After it is extracted, a space remains.
Cause 3. When the ligament connecting the lip and gum is strong (labial frenum)
The ligament visible when lifting the upper lip (the labial frenum) extends deeply between the front teeth and pushes the teeth apart.
Cause 4. Bad habits or gum disease
There are also cases where a habit of pushing the front teeth with the tongue, or weakened jawbone due to gum disease, causes the teeth to spread apart.
Because the causes vary this much, an approach like “there’s a gap, so let’s just fill it” without a precise diagnosis is very dangerous. If a patient whose cause is the labial frenum receives only resin treatment, the ligament will continue to push the teeth, and the resin will likely break quickly or the gap will reopen.
These are the cases where resin treatment is a good choice for spaced front teeth.
A small gap of about 1–2 mm caused by small tooth size, or a case where the overall alignment is even but only the front teeth are slightly spaced apart, is suitable for someone who needs a quick improvement before an important schedule.

Because the shape of the teeth is being refined, if performed by an experienced doctor, you can achieve a beautiful result in just one day, almost like laminate veneers.

However, resin is weaker than natural teeth, so if you often eat hard or chewy foods with your front teeth, there is a risk of breakage. It can also become discolored over time due to coffee, curry, and similar foods, so regular maintenance is necessary.
Most importantly, remember that this is a procedure where the result can vary greatly depending on the medical team’s aesthetic sense and precision.
When orthodontics is the only correct answer
Orthodontic treatment for spaced front teeth is not just about closing the gap; it is a fundamental treatment that moves the roots of the teeth into healthier positions, restoring ideal occlusion and facial balance.
If the gap is wide, 3 mm or more, if structural issues such as a labial frenum or supernumerary tooth are the cause, if the front teeth have become spaced while also appearing crooked or rotated, or if there are overall bite problems, orthodontics may be helpful.

Many people hesitate because of the treatment period or the appearance of appliances. However, these days, partial orthodontics, which quickly moves only the area around the problematic front teeth instead of doing full orthodontic treatment, is also being actively performed.
In addition, there are now many aesthetic appliance options such as clear aligners and lingual braces, which can greatly reduce inconvenience in daily life.
A dental clinic that can make a patient-centered promise

It is important to find a medical team that can say, not “What treatment do you want?”, but rather, “What treatment would be best for you?”
To do that, they should have extensive experience treating cases similar to yours, and accordingly be skilled at handling a variety of methods, right?
So if you are looking for a dental clinic that can suggest the right method for you, it would be good to search in advance through the clinic’s website and other sources to see what kind of clinical experience they have accumulated and whether actual patients were satisfied with the treatment.
Of course, there is information that is difficult to understand through search alone, so after looking it up, we recommend meeting the medical team in person for a consultation and then making a careful decision.
