Recommended orthodontic timing by stage: key summary for our child
Golden time for orthodontic treatment: key summary
Hello.
For 18 long years,
with a cumulative 5,000 procedures,
I have been writing a new chapter in history.
I am Oh Su-hwan,
representative director of Smile D Dental Clinic,
a dentist who smiles.
Our clinic is a collaborative practice of three specialists,
and we establish treatment plans that also consider
the patient’s overall health and quality of life.
We were able to achieve the grateful and rewarding
Naver rating of 4.82.
In return for the love and support we have received
from our patients,
the month of October is dedicated to intensive care
for only 30 patients.

"My child is in elementary school,
and seems to be starting to care
about appearance.
If you recommend orthodontic timing by stage,
what age is best to start?"

If you are reading this post now, you are probably a parent or guardian 고민 over your child’s orthodontic treatment, as in the concern above.
There are many things said about starting orthodontic treatment early...
But since it involves working on a growing child’s teeth,
you likely wanted to approach it carefully by accurately understanding the recommended timing for orthodontic treatment by stage.

As a board-certified orthodontic specialist with 18 years of experience, certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare,
I would like to thoroughly answer your questions through the following sections.
- Recommended orthodontic timing by stage
- The pediatric orthodontic process explained through real cases
Let’s go through these two topics step by step.
Please read carefully and take away the tips you need. ^^

Recommended orthodontic timing by stage,
When should pediatric orthodontic treatment begin?
To be honest, there is no exact age that is always defined as the recommended timing for orthodontic treatment by stage.
However, it is true that treatment is quite efficient when (1) orthodontic treatment is needed and (2) it is done at a young age.

The first reason is that there is a high chance of correcting the issue without tooth extraction.

Of course, if crowding is severe or the skeletal imbalance is significant, extraction may be unavoidable,
but children’s teeth and jawbone are more flexible than adults’,
so it is easier to create space or move teeth, which greatly reduces the likelihood of extraction.
The second reason is that the chance of avoiding surgery is also higher.

If an adult has disharmony between the upper and lower jaws, double-jaw surgery is often considered,
but for young children, there is enough time to guide and control growth to improve the jaw relationship.
Another major advantage is that the treatment period itself tends to be shorter than for adults.
Adults have harder, more solid bone, so tooth movement is slower, but children can often finish treatment relatively quickly.
So if we recommend orthodontic timing by stage, when is the best time?

It varies from person to person, but in general, around third to fourth grade in elementary school is typical.
However, in cases of severe underbite or a recessed chin, treatment may start as early as age 6 or 7.

A real case of a child with an underbite:
What is the pediatric orthodontic treatment process?
You may be wondering how orthodontic treatment is carried out for young children.
-
Each case in the body of this post was published with the patient’s consent.

All treatments may involve side effects,
so please make your decision after speaking with a doctor.
Let me explain with a case of a 9-year-old child treated at our clinic.

This patient had a typical underbite, with the lower front teeth protruding more than the upper front teeth.

After a detailed diagnosis, I determined that the key was to control jaw growth first.
| Treatment goal | Suppress lower jaw growth & promote upper jaw growth |
|---|
| Method | Wear a removable intraoral appliance to gradually improve the underbite relationship |
Based on the above goals and method, we carried out the first phase of orthodontic treatment.

Once the shape is adjusted so that the upper front teeth cover the lower front teeth, the first phase of treatment is completed.

Then, after the patient grows and the permanent teeth have fully aligned,
a second round of braces is applied to achieve normal tooth alignment.

If you want your child’s orthodontic treatment to succeed, it can also be a good idea to look at the clinic’s track record.
Since treatment proceeds through the first and second phases like this,
and because it is important to follow up on whether the treatment results are maintained after growth,
it is naturally reassuring to choose a clinic that has cared for patients in the local community for a long time.

At our clinic, I, a board-certified orthodontic specialist who has remained in the same place for 18 years since opening,
and the new orthodontic specialist director who recently joined us,
carefully analyze the child’s growth pattern, alveolar bone condition, and jaw relationship,
then design a customized orthodontic plan and provide treatment.
Through regular checkups, we help ensure that the child develops a healthy and strong bite.

Only when this systematic process is followed in advance
can stable long-term results be achieved, so please keep that in mind.

Today, we talked about the timing of orthodontic treatment.
If you are wondering, "Is it too early because my child is still young?" or "Is it too late to start now?",
I recommend getting an accurate diagnosis from a specialist
and confirming the optimal treatment timing
that matches your child’s stage of growth. ^^
