How long do I need to wear a retainer?”

If you are reading this post now, you probably relate to the concern above.
At this point, I thought that once I got braces, I would be able to overcome my appearance-related complexes,
and finally be free from tooth-related stress...
But as I looked into the information,
there were quite a few reactions like, “I didn’t know the retainer period after orthodontic treatment was this long,” and “Wearing a retainer is too hard.”
So you may have had trouble making a decision.

You were probably also curious about how long you actually have to wear a retainer.
As a board-certified orthodontic specialist with 18 years of experience, certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, I will personally address the following in the body below:

How Long Is the Retainer Period After Orthodontic Treatment?
How Long Should You Wear a Retainer?

The answer to how long you should wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment is actually: “It depends on the person.”

Among our orthodontic specialists as well, there is agreement that you need to make an effort to keep it on for as long as possible.
When I was in training, people often said, “You should do it for at least half of your life.”
Recently, some even say, “It’s safest to wear it for life.”

This is because of the body’s homeostasis, meaning its tendency to maintain its original state.
It’s easy to understand if you think of rebound weight gain after dieting.

Teeth also have a tendency to return to their original position,
so if you do not wear a retainer, the force that gradually moves them back toward their previous state will act on them.
Moreover, as you get older, the gums and supporting bone lower and weaken, which makes it increasingly likely that tooth alignment will shift.
In other words, to extend the retainer period after orthodontic treatment as much as possible, you must wear the retainer for as long as you can.

Although it is difficult to quantify,
if we must specify a minimum, it should be at least 3 years.

At our clinic, the orthodontic specialist doctor and the newly joined orthodontic specialist doctor
personally meet each patient one-on-one to establish the diagnosis and orthodontic treatment plan.

After treatment is completed, we explain in detail what results are expected and how aftercare should be managed,
taking enough time to do so thoroughly.
That way, the patient can clearly understand the treatment they are about to receive and make a decision after careful consideration.

What Precautions Should You Take When Wearing a Retainer During the Retainer Period After Orthodontic Treatment?
Retainers are broadly divided into “fixed” and “removable.”
I will explain the precautions for each type.
Fixed type: a method attached to the inside with wire

First, with a fixed retainer, the lower teeth may come into contact with the bonded area and the wire during chewing.
If hard or chewy foods keep applying impact, this wire may become distorted or come off, so please be careful.
If it breaks or becomes distorted, please visit the dental clinic for treatment.
Also, food debris can easily get caught around the wire, so it must be kept clean.
Removable type: a method where you put the appliance in and take it out

It is a good idea to clean a removable retainer about once a day.
You can use kitchen detergent instead of toothpaste.
When storing it, wrap it in a wet tissue and make sure to put it in its case.
There are surprisingly many cases where people accidentally step on it and break it or lose it.

Furthermore, if you suddenly wear a retainer after not using it for a long time,
your teeth may have moved slightly in the meantime, so it may feel sore or tight.
In this case, we recommend not forcing it and instead visiting the dental clinic to have the appliance checked.

In this post, we looked at retainer wear and care methods, which many people are curious about.
Here is a summary of the key points from the body.
1️⃣ It is safest to wear a retainer for at least 3 years, and preferably as long as possible.
---
2️⃣ For removable retainers, cleaning and storage are key; for fixed retainers, preventing damage and maintaining hygiene are key.
Orthodontic treatment does not “end” when the appliance comes off; that is when maintenance begins.
If you set up a plan that suits you with a specialist and consistently manage it,
you will be able to preserve the results of the treatment you worked so hard for over the years.
