After having a wisdom tooth removed, one of the first concerns that comes to mind is:
“When can I start eating?”
Many people hear that they should eat only porridge, but are unsure exactly how many days they need to do so.
When you look for information or reviews online and on social media, the wide variety of advice can sometimes make things even more confusing.
In fact, when it comes to eating after wisdom tooth extraction, how you eat is more important than exactly when you start.

Hello, this is Smile D Dental Clinic, which has been providing care in the Sinsa Station area of Seoul.
Today, we will summarize when to eat after wisdom tooth extraction, which foods to be careful with, and ways to support recovery.

Why do you need to be careful about eating after wisdom tooth extraction?
After a wisdom tooth is removed, a blood clot—commonly called a scab—naturally forms at the extraction site.

The blood clot needs to settle securely in place, as this may help reduce the risk of infection and allow the wound to heal normally.
If this process does not proceed properly, recovery may be delayed or pain may continue, so it is a good idea to pay attention to what you eat during the first few days.

Immediately after extraction, the anesthesia usually lasts for about 2–3 hours.
During this time, the sensation in your mouth is reduced. If you eat, you may accidentally bite your lips or tongue, and hot foods may stimulate the blood vessels and potentially lead to bleeding, so caution is needed.

When can you start eating?
Once the anesthesia has worn off and the bleeding has subsided to some extent, we recommend starting gradually with soft, mild foods such as rice water, thin porridge, and yogurt.
At this time, take care to prevent food from touching the extraction site, and it may help to chew with the molars on the opposite side.

After about 2–3 days, many people gradually transition to soft regular meals.
However, this timing may vary depending on the individual’s recovery rate, and for some people it may be safer to continue eating porridge for a few more days.

If recovery is proceeding quickly, some people may switch to regular meals starting on the second day.
However, there are also cases where people return to the clinic because bleeding starts again or inflammation develops at the extraction site after rushing the process, so it is best to proceed carefully during the early period.

Foods to be careful with after wisdom tooth extraction
It may be helpful to learn in advance about foods and habits that can delay recovery or contribute to inflammation.
Drinking beverages through a straw can increase pressure in the mouth and cause the blood clot to become dislodged.
If the blood clot comes out, the wound may be left exposed, which can increase pain and lengthen the recovery period.
This is called alveolar osteitis (dry socket), so we recommend drinking directly from a cup.

Hot broth and spicy foods also require caution.
Hot foods such as ramen and rice soup can dilate the blood vessels and increase the possibility of bleeding, while spicy foods can irritate the wound and worsen swelling or pain, so it is best to avoid them for several days.
Nuts, fruits with seeds, and hard snacks can easily leave small pieces in the extraction site and are difficult to clean out, potentially creating an environment where bacteria can multiply.
The act of chewing hard foods itself can also place a burden on a healing wound, so we recommend avoiding them for the time being.

Alcohol consumption and smoking are also habits that can affect recovery.
Alcohol can dilate the blood vessels and increase the possibility of bleeding, while smoking can affect blood flow and delay recovery.
Smoking in particular is known to be associated with the occurrence of dry socket, so refraining from smoking during the recovery period may be helpful.
Pain and recovery can vary from person to person
You may think, “It feels better than I expected, so maybe it’s okay to just eat normally.”
However, unlike the sensations you feel on the surface, the inside of the wound is often still healing.

In fact, some people return to the clinic because they overexerted themselves by eating too soon and developed renewed bleeding or inflammation, so it is best to proceed carefully for several days.

The speed of recovery and the degree of pain may also vary depending on the difficulty of the extraction and the individual condition of the gums and bone.
Even with the same type of wisdom tooth extraction, the recovery period and precautions may differ depending on the circumstances, so if you have questions, you may want to ask about them during your appointment.

As we wrap up today’s post
Eating after wisdom tooth extraction is one area where how carefully you manage your diet for several days can affect the speed of recovery.

If you are concerned about whether your recovery is progressing well, or if there is anything about your eating or daily habits that you would like to have checked, we recommend consulting a dental professional to assess your current condition.
